Chapter 14

Oracle’s Insight: Lailah Azul

That Luis’ promise would come true hardly seemed possible.

Then again, Lailah had seen him do things that no mage should ever have been able to achieve—even before she’d blessed him with untold power.

Her pulse quickened as she waited with the rest of the ladies on the mountainside in the jet. Which was technically also a spaceship now.

Incredible.

She was capable of flight with the use of her spectral wings, of course. Soaring up into the sky was something she’d longed to do for so long.

Something her mother always stopped her from doing because of how valuable her power was.

Still, even at her strongest she couldn’t have entered the atmosphere as Luis had.

It had taken him almost no effort at all.

The ship now overlooked a deep cliff, which bottomed out at the base of a hill miles away.

Luis had locked the ship into a hover over the surface of the ground so that they’d be safe from any tremors from when the weapon finally hit.

The hill was riddled with cave exits. The only sign that this location was well-occupied by orcs.

It was known as Krakka Dakka to the orcs. The group had to fly deep into the southeast orc territory just to get to it.

The number of orcs they’d flown over were literally uncountable.

A normal army would’ve been killed a thousand times over trying to cover half the distance they’d crossed within hours.

Though she couldn’t see him, Lailah sensed Luis phasing through the exterior of the orc mound down below. Completing the final stage of his preparation.

He’d taken a few slugs of steel down and charged them magnetically as what he’d called targeting magnets. Which apparently would guide the Sky Hammer down on his foes.

Then he’d attached flakes of the targeting metal to the orcs that the Lion’s Maw had identified as war chieftains.

Supposedly the Sky Hammer could penetrate deep, deep underground.

Lailah could hardly believe it.

Any of it.

She’d spent so long staring at the amplifying bowl with Crucius. Her mother’s approving smile on her only when she was in the bowl assisting with the spell.

Lailah had been in it so many times that she’d counted every visible tile within it.

Over four thousand.

She’d had eight hours a day for untold years to be sure of that.

Every day a mere hour of free time after, and then fitful sleep before starting all over.

With her mother telling her the fate of the world rested on her shoulders each time she asked for a break.

That had all changed when Luis had entered her life and done more than the Lion’s Maw had in decades, all in the span of a few months.

She shivered in delight at the memory of the reports, and her body flushed at the thought of her first meeting with the barbarian mage.

“Party’s about to get started, ladies. You all in the ship?” Luis’ deep voice came in over the communication system.

“We’re all good, Luis,” Jade said.

She seemed to be the one that handled most of the communications.

Evelyn and Isla were on point for combat, and Tisha handled technical items and repairs.
