Letter from Helen to Major Thomas Doyle:

Wednesday, 14th May, 1901

My Dear Thomas,

When I wrote you asking about our future, I may have expected a number of possible replies, but I never expected this.

You have met someone, you say, and because of this, you feel you cannot resume our previous relationship when you return.

What, then, am I suppose to do? Does this mean we are to live in the same house in a sort of brother-sister relationship, or can this mean you do not intend to come back to our home? Are you perhaps even intending to import your ‘someone’ to England when the war is over?

I seem to recall that years ago you told me your feelings for me would never change. What have I done that you are not, at this moment, doing yourself? I daresay you would have behaved exactly the same as you are doing now, even if I had not been guilty of misbehaviour.

I’ll tell you what I am going to do. I am leaving your house as quickly as I can make arrangements. I am taking Arabella and Edward with me. You can keep the three children who are undoubtedly yours.

I can probably become a music teacher, and Arabella can as well, since she is a good pianist now.

If you think this letter is incoherent it is because I am drunk. I shall always be drunk from now on, except when I am giving the music lessons!

When you return, I shall be gone, but I don’t suppose you will notice, or care.

Ever, your loving wife,

Helen
