Chapter 15

Ashlyn woke the next morning and stretched, yawning as her spent muscles decompressed. Feeling her lips curve, she noted her soreness down below. Scott had a pretty nice package to go along with that delicious chest. Excited to see the goods again, she picked up her phone, wondering what to do now. Should she text him? Maybe something light and funny? Gnawing her lip, she contemplated.

The ground rules they’d set made sense since neither one of them were ready for a relationship. She was still getting over Robert’s betrayal and Scott was slowly opening himself to a sexual encounter with someone besides his wife. Man, they were two peas in a pod with all their combined issues, although Scott’s was a stroke of terrible luck whereas hers was a product of misunderstandings and mistakes.

“Well, Robert’s in the past for good now, Ashlyn,” she murmured to herself. “Good freaking riddance.” Giving a little squeal, she rose, deciding she’d give Scott time to text her before she reached out to him.

An hour later her phone dinged and she lit up as bright as the screen when she read Scott’s text.

Scott: Well, I think this is long enough to wait to text you, right? I have no idea how to do this. Take pity on me and remember I was in my twenties when I last tried to seduce someone.

Laughing, her thumbs composed a text back.

Ashlyn: You’re doing a pretty good job. Not stalkerish at all. How old are you anyway? I’m thirty-three and figure you’re around fifty since I leave you in my dust every time we jog.

Scott responded with an eye roll emoji before the text bubble appeared.

Scott: I’m thirty-eight and will immediately stop slowing down on the curves like I always do when I wait for you.

Ashlyn: In your dreams, grandpa. Anyway, how are you today?

She wanted to ask more but felt that texting was so impersonal. He’d taken a huge step last night after several years of celibacy and she didn’t want to make him uncomfortable.

Scott: I’m good. Great actually. I think I dreamed of you. Weird, since I usually don’t dream anymore.

Aw. Taken by the sweet comment, she searched for something poignant to write back.

Ashlyn: I really liked falling asleep in your arms. That’s probably super sappy so just tell me to shut up if it’s too much. But I had a nice time with you. Thank you, Scott.

Scott: Nice enough to hang again tonight?

Ashlyn’s eyebrows narrowed as she remembered he had his client dinner tonight.

Scott: The Robinsons said I could bring a guest but don’t feel obligated. If you want to join me, I’d love to have you. Completely up to you.

Feeling her heart slam into overdrive, she couldn’t say yes fast enough.

Ashlyn: Of course, I’d like to come. Thank you so much for asking me.

Scott: Whew. Okay, great. I get really nervous every time I ask you something like that. I’ll pick you up at six-thirty. Sound good?

Ashlyn: It’s so cute you get nervous but here’s a pro tip: I’ll always say yes to you.
