CHAPTER NINE

“Ginger Roberts?” I turned to find myself facing Brett Cannon, the star pitcher for the Florida Marlins.

“Yes, and you must be Brett.” Duh, I said to myself. As though everyone didn’t know who Brett Cannon was. Baseball protégée who had been drafted straight out of high school. He had grown up in the Orlando area and was only a year older than I was. It was strange we hadn’t met until now.

“Crazy we haven’t met until now,” he remarked with a grin. “Seeing that we’re both local, ya know.”

I smiled and nodded my head. “I was just thinking the same thing, actually.”

“Well, guess we’ll get to know each other now.” Brett was handsome, lean, with light brown hair and hazel eyes. I was wearing heels, so he wasn’t even that much taller than I was, seeing that he was in sneakers. Usually, men towered over me.

“So, excited for the shoot?” Brett and I had both been hired to do a series of advertisements, both print, and commercial, promoting Florida tourism.

“Yeah, I guess,” he replied sheepishly. “I don’t normally do this type of stuff. My mom made me.”

“Wait, what?” I couldn’t help but laugh. I knew that Brett, being a year older than me, was twenty-six. “Your mom made you do it?”

“I know, I know.” He blushed but couldn’t help but smile. “She’s a life-long Floridian, loves the state. Insisted that I do this. I’m more accustomed to fashion shoots. Not that there’s anything wrong with this!”

I felt as if I had stuck my foot in my mouth, acting as if I was above filming some cheesy tourist commercials. “Ah, well, my mom would agree with your mom,” I admitted. “She was born here, too.”

“I think we may be some of the only people to actually be born and raised in Florida.” This was a well-known bit of trivia as Florida mainly consisted of people who have moved here from other places. So to be a native Floridian was rare.

“Hopefully, we’ll make our moms proud.”

“Ginger, Brett, so good to see you!” Janet, the project manager in charge of the campaign, came bursting in. “Can I get you anything? Coffee? Tea?”

“I’m good, thanks,” Brett said.

“Same.” I held up the bottle of water I was currently drinking.

“Okay, then. Well, let’s just go over today’s agenda.” Janet pulled two sheets of paper from her bag, handing one to each of us. “We’ll just be doing the print work today, but we have several setups we are going to do. So, you’ll have some outfit changes. Let’s get you over to wardrobe so that they can set you up. Once we know what you’ll be wearing, we’ll get you into hair and makeup.”

“Hair and makeup?” Brett frowned, running his hand over his closely cropped haircut.

“Just a bit of powder for you, I’m sure,” Janet reassured him. “Ginger will be the one spending the most time sitting in the make-up chair.”

“Doesn’t look like you need any makeup,” Brett said to me sincerely, and I could not help but feel touched.
