Chapter Six

Grant folded another shirt and put it in his suitcase. Not much more left to pack and he’d be set for the trip home tomorrow. He had an early morning coming — not that he wasn’t used to those — but they were usually a lot more pleasant than fighting his way through Louisville International Airport. It didn’t help that he didn’t want to go and he felt he was leaving things unfinished…in more ways than one.

He lifted his gaze from the suitcase to the window. He’d called a realtor the day before, after returning from Shawn’s place, and the realtor came out that same evening to assess the property. He’d already done a lot of work on the place, and the realtor felt it was ready for the market. The woman threw out a listing price, and though he thought it was a bit high, he agreed to be done with it. If the farm wasn’t selling, he could always have the price lowered.

With that done, the next thing he needed was to find good homes for the old broodmares and two geldings. If things hadn’t taken the turn they had with Shawn, he would’ve let Shawn place the horses through Forever Hope. But things had taken that turn and there was no point in thinking about what-ifs.

No matter how much he wanted to.

Grant lowered his gaze to his suitcase, but paused in packing, his mind taken over with thoughts of the day before, of the words said between him and Shawn. He hadn’t heard from him all day, all night, and into today. Of course, he hadn’t tried to call or text Shawn, either. He kept going back and forth on if he should try and reach out to him. One second he’d tell himself to call Shawn, then his next thought was Shawn should be the one to make the next move. Immediately after that, he was telling himself to not be so damn stubborn and call him. It was back and forth, back and forth, all within his own head and he was making himself crazy with it. Same as he had when trying to decide whether or not to sell the farm. Oddly enough, it was all of this with Shawn that pushed him into making a decision with that.

There were a lot of untruths to Shawn’s words, but there was one thing he’d been right about; this wasn’t an instance of fate. It was happenstance and coincidence, and there was no point in looking at it as anything more. Lady wasn’t meant to help bring the farm back. She was meant to go on to a good home…somewhere…

And for himself, he was used to living a life trying to beat the odds, but setting his heart on Shawn was too much of a gamble.

Grant threw a shirt in his suitcase rather than fold it. It’d been a damn long time since he’d enjoyed anyone’s company as much as Shawn’s, and that was not including the bedroom time.
