Chapter 5

Finn didn’t call—not the next day or the day after that. Several times, Austen’s fingers hovered over his phone, intent on texting him. In the end, he always put it away before temptation got the best of him. Finn’s usual table at the coffee house sat empty. Austen stared at the barren space where Finn should be, wishing he could make him appear by will alone. It took five days for him to break. If they were over, Austen wanted to see it in Finn’s eyes. Maybe then, he could let it go.

He could hear the music coming from inside before he made it to the door. The sad notes weren’t part of Finn’s usual set. Instead, it was slow, and more like what Austen had expected to hear Finn play the first time he’d been here. He knocked, but no one answered. Most likely, Finn couldn’t hear him. Trying the door, he found it unlocked. Austen let himself in. At this point, pride was out the window anyhow.

Finn hadn’t noticed him yet, and Austen didn’t go out of his way to announce himself. All the mornings Austen had watched Finn from a distance came rushing back. The same longing to know all there was to know about this man fed Austen’s inability to move. With his eyes closed, Finn’s lips moved, but no sound emerged. Austen knew without having to be told that Finn was counting notes inside his head. Finn’s fingers slid over the strings of his cello, holding them in place as he moved his bow across them. Austen was in awe of how easy Finn made creating beautiful music look.

With a jerk, the music ended on a high-pitched screech. Finn pushed the cello away from him with enough force that it went crashing to the floor. Finn looked down at the instrument at his feet. Not an ounce of emotion marred his features, but the air crackled with it. It was sitting on Austen, squeezing the oxygen from his lungs. Finn tossed the bow on top of the cello. His chin lifted and his gaze met Austen’s. The air left Austen. Every emotion his features lacked brewed in Finn’s eyes. He recognized that inner fury. Austen had seen it in his own eyes every time he’d looked in the mirror after he’d woken up paralyzed. The same helplessness and frustration poured from Finn in waves. He didn’t know what was causing Finn’s pain, but Austen wanted to fix it—needed to make it stop.

“Sorry for turning up like this. I wanted to see you.”

Finn didn’t move from his seat. His expression didn’t change. “There’s no reason to apologize. You’re always welcome wherever I am.” Oh God. Even Finn’s voice sounded dead. Austen hated it. Still, he couldn’t move closer. Finn was half an inch from explosion, his contained fury brewed in the air. Austen didn’t bother trying to pretend nothing was happening.

“Tell me,” he demanded. If Finn was finished with him, Austen could take it. Life hadn’t destroyed him yet.
