Chapter Twenty-Two

Thea

Checking the clock on my nightstand, I slammed my notebook shut and shoved it in my backpack. This exam was going to kick my ass. I could already tell, and I hadn’t even stepped on campus yet. I should have studied more, but I wasn’t sure it would have helped. As distracted as I’d been, I was doing good to retain any names, dates, and concepts.

I didn’t fully understand why I cared so much. I certainly hadn’t in high school. And, if I didn’t manage to sway Tristin later today, my time at Harbor U would be over, anyway.

The thought shouldn’t bother me so much. I’d never planned to stay more than a semester or two. But things had changed. I was no longer here only for answers about my mother. It was difficult to admit, but I knew it was true.

I was halfway down the stairs when a figure with a familiar rigid stride came into view. Freezing, I watched Tristin approach the staircase, his duffel slung over one shoulder.

His gaze snagged on mine, neither icy nor warm but falling somewhere in between.

“How?” I croaked, unable to form an intelligible question.

He stopped a couple of steps below mine, and I couldn’t help but notice how much his hair had grown out. It had surpassed disheveled, moving right into unkempt territory. Not that it detracted from his attractiveness one bit. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got mistaken for a rock star looking like this, especially with the form-fitting black T-shirt he wore.

“You can thank your boyfriend.”

The way he said boyfriend made it sound like a dirty word. But, right now, I didn’t care. Even if this didn’t count as a truce, he was home. Vincent would be mollified, and Leo’s trust fund was safe.

It was a step in the right direction.

“Did Leo tell you...everything?” That encompassed a lot, including what we’d discovered in Vincent’s safe.

“Yes. We’ll go see Greg this weekend.”

Relief swamped me. How had Leo managed to convince him to not only return to the mansion but to help with Greg? It hardly seemed possible.

“Thank you.”

Tristin nodded, his eyes never leaving mine. I wished I could see through them into his brain, because I had no clue what he was thinking. He didn’t appear pissed to be here, which was encouraging. But I didn’t get the sense he’d softened toward me, either.

I wanted to ask him where we stood. If we could peacefully coexist in this house, or if I needed to avoid him at all costs. But I didn’t have time for any of that. Not if I didn’t want to miss my exam.

Moving past him on the stairs, I said, “Well, I’ve got to get to class.”

“Me too. Give me a minute to drop this in my room, and you can ride with me.”

Wait, what? He was going to Western Civ?

“I wasn’t aware you were still in the class.”

But he was already halfway up to the third floor. “One minute,” he called.

Stunned, I turned and walked to the kitchen on autopilot.
