Chapter

Sixteen

Which of Flavia’s minimal possessions could anyone want badly enough that they’d break into her storage locker to get it? This was the question occupying my thoughts as I drove from The Busted Knuckle to my cottage where Ruby and I switched to our bicycles. Maybe they were treasure hunters. As in, they wanted a souvenir from a killer. But if that was true, why spend that long looking through her boxes? Wouldn’t any little thing do?

“What are you so deep in thought about?” Ruby asked as we approached The Twisty Skein.

“Wondering what the person was looking for.” I shook my head, trying to clear away the questions. “Anyway, looks like we’ve got work to do.”

“We do. Starting with making a suspect list.”

“I’m having dinner with Jozef tonight, but I could stop by your place after the unchurch.”

“Perfect. You know I’ll want to hear all about that.”

Of course she would.

Fortunately, customer traffic was steady today, but during the few lulls, my mind immediately turned to either the vandal and what they could have been looking for or Krys’s upcoming meeting with Flavia. Thankfully, the day went fast, and before I knew it, Krys walked through the shop door. I greeted him with a kiss on the cheek and asked if he was ready, but he didn’t seem to hear me.

“Krys? Are you okay?”

“Yes, sorry, I’m a little distracted. Trying to remember everything I want to talk with Flavia about. Jayne said I can’t even bring in a piece of paper.”

I settled him at a table in the dining room with a cup of Focus tea, just enough to calm his mind and nerves, while I did my closing ritual.

As we traveled the short distance to the sheriff’s station, I thought about the burglar and how they broke into our shops and took only the candle molds and candle-making supplies. Was the break-in at Flavia’s storage locker related? She made and sold negative intent candles to villagers and possibly tourists. Since they searched through Flavia’s things before coming to our shops, maybe they were looking to take over where my sister left off and wanted to use her supplies to do it. Maybe they figured they could save themself a step and use materials already laced with negativity. Could that be why they were in her unit for so long? They were looking for something that wasn’t there anymore because, little did they know, I’d melted down all of Flavia’s wax weeks ago. Her supplies were gone.

“Good afternoon, Dr. Soroka. Reeva.” Jayne was sitting on the bench on the station’s front porch. Meeka ran over, tail wagging, and gave a little hello bark. “Are you ready?”

“And willing,” Krys replied.

Jayne brought his scooter inside the station for safekeeping, then put Meeka in her cage in the back of her Outback while we got in and buckled up for the drive to the unchurch. Along the way, she reminded him, “If you’ve got anything in your pockets, please take it out.”

“Are you going
