‘Super Star or Super Queer’

Plastered across the front page of a trashy tabloid in the largest black print ever seen screams the heart wrenching word QUEER, standing out bigger than any other word on the page. It’s all AJ sees and he crumbles. The awful word leaps from the top of the page above a positive photo that shows AJ with Gabriel making their entrance to the Ocean Beach Plaza together. The photo of Gabriel’s extended hand assisting AJ from the limousine is nothing compared to his face attached to the tainted word beginning with the big ‘Q’.

A kiss on the lips in public doesn’t even compare.

“Our first date!” AJ’s quietly hums. “How did they get this?” His hands fall to his lap and the paper rag floats in slow motion to the floor. Even worse, it lands face up for the whole room to catch sight of all over again. His eyes water uncontrollably and he then escapes without explanation to search for solitude.

Knowing the pain his best friend must be feeling, Nicholas slides from his chair, picks up the crumpled paper and folds it in half. He hides it from everybody to hopefully distinguish further discussion and bring mindless thoughts to an end.

Smirking, Carter yanks the paper from Nicholas’s grasp. Skimming a few lines down the column, he begins to read out loud, making certain everyone hears every brutal word written.

‘Although Superstar lead singer Alec Benjamin James from the popular musical group Inner-Beat thinks he has more than just the girls fooled, we have discovered a fairy in hiding. The vocal wonder was seen hobnobbing hand in hand at a local plaza restaurant with new love interest Gabriel Alex McDermott – star pitcher for the Florida Fantoms.

Acquaintances on a personal level confirmed the two men are undeniably lovers.

“Who the bloody fuck could that be?” Leo screeches. “Personal level, my fat butt.” His head at this point is about to blow.

Carter graces the column further down and continues reading.

Exposed, confiscated and passed on as evidence of the truth, a Fantom baseball cap (pictured) was given to Inner-Beats lead singer Alec James by Gabriel McDermott the night they met, which included the exchange of a hug and a kiss. ‘Love Gabriel and call me’, was permanently etched on the underside of the caps visor.

“That’s enough!” Leo rips the blasted paper from Carter’s grasp with an openhanded karate chop down the centerfold. “Those fucking bastard’s will do anything to destroy us.” He keeps yelling, “Joely, I want resolution immediately.” He jabs a fat finger into Joel’s face nearly poking him in the tiny eye.

Grabbing hold of his red cowboy hat as if Leo’s breath is the wind, Joel backs away.

Slivers of ragged newspaper dangle between Carter’s fingers. He tosses them on the desk while hiding a smirk. He hates AJ.

Nicholas scans the room, stops when his eyes meet Carters and he glares at him.

“That’s it for today. Everybody out of here,” Leo roars at the top of his lungs nearly keeling over from a heart attack.
