Freya didn't know how she was going to sleep that night. Leif had tried to kidnap her and blow up her store; he was trafficking elves like they were trinkets, and that was before she got to Bayn.

Bayn, the fucking Winter Prince, who was determined to protect her.

No one had tried to protect her before. She had always been one to fight her own battles, from schoolyard bullies to the cluster fuck of a relationship with Leif. Her father had always been supportive of her being able to stand up for herself. It wasn't like she couldn't take care of herself, but Bayn looking out for her felt…nice. She was also smart enough to know this was one fight she wouldn't win on her own. She could barely fathom that she was in it at all.

Fucking bombs in my building. Who the hell was Leif working for that he felt secure enough to risk that kind of retaliation? If he didn't know that Bayn was the one that attacked him, then she had to assume Leif was acting like this because he was jealous she had been with a fae. He clearly didn't know Freya at all if he thought kidnapping her and killing her lover was the way to win her back.

But Bayn's not your lover, she reminded herself. Was he? He was three doors over, and his presence filled her apartment like it was almost too small to contain him. Instead of suffocating her, it was reassuring.

Freya had a knee jerk reaction to him coming and staying with her, but seeing the mess Leif's asshole men had made of her place made her feel better about Bayn staying with her.

Except for now, when she was trying to sleep, imagining him in her guest bed, his big, muscled body stretched out and naked on her favorite quilt. Freya put a pillow over her head and groaned.

Bayn's muffled voice carried through the walls, and she sat up, listening. Who was he talking to now? She cringed, hating the sting of jealousy. She heard him say 'Kian,' and she fell back onto her mattress with a relieved sigh. Then she went back to groaning into the pillow.

Pathetic.
