CHAPTER SIX

THE FOLLOWING DAY, Linc had barely arrived at Jackie’s when Mrs. Baker walked over with Maritime’s leash secured to the handle of a wagon she pulled over the sandy lawn.

“I spoke with Jackie just a little while ago. They were on Huntington Island so they should be here soon.” She gestured toward the wagon. “I baked a few things to welcome her home. There’s plenty of those cookies you love in there, too, so be sure to help yourself. While I’m thinking of it, thanks again for unclogging my drain last week.”

“No problem on the drain.” Linc’s mouth watered at the thought of Mrs. Baker’s chocolate no-bake cookies. “You trying to fatten me up, Mary?”

The older woman laughed but was saved from answering by Lottie turning the car into the driveway and clicking open the door to the basement garage. From the back seat, Jackie waved as they passed. Maritime went crazy barking and bouncing around to where she freed her leash from the wagon handle. Barking, she charged toward the car that had just parked and excitedly jumped up to peer in at Jackie. Bark. Bark. Bark.

Linc and Mrs. Baker took off after the dog, attempting to keep her from scratching the car’s paint. Jackie was now talking to the dog, so Maritime wasn’t having being pulled away from her favorite person whom she hadn’t seen in days.

Bark. Bark. Bark.

“Maritime, shush! Would it have been easier if I hadn’t pulled the car into the garage?” Lottie spoke loudly to be heard over the dog. Perhaps giving up, she opened the car’s back door. The dog jumped in, licking Gram’s face in an excited welcome home. Laughing, Gram loved on the dog. “Don’t let her bump your foot,” Lottie reminded her, then glanced back at Linc. “I wasn’t really thinking about which set of stairs would be easiest to get Gram up. Is this even going to work? I should have hired someone to help you get her inside.”

Linc eyed her, wondering at her nervousness and finally attributing it to Gram’s coming home. “She barely weights a hundred pounds soaking wet. I don’t foresee getting her inside the house as being a problem, do you?”

Lottie’s gaze dropped to his arms. Her throat worked. “Uh...no, I guess not so long as I can keep Maritime out from under your feet.”

“Hello, I am right here, you two,” Jackie said from the car’s back seat. “It’s my foot that’s broken, not my hearing.”

Lottie shot her grandmother a look. “Getting you into the house would be a lot easier if it was your hearing.”

Linc laughed. “Lottie has a point, Jackie. You sure went to a lot of effort to get me to carry you across your threshold.”

Her arms around Maritime’s neck as she hugged the dog to her, scratching behind her ears and managing to keep Maritime from licking her face, Jackie snorted. “If I’d wanted you to carry me across my threshold, you’d have done so long ago.”

Linc chuckled again. “I imagine I would.
