Lucas sipped his coffee, silently browsing through the news section in the local paper when one news item in particular caught his eye. It wasn’t even the main news. Just a small article limited to a single column, but it was enough. There were a few faces that turned themselves into a memory inside Lucas’ mind, and this was one of them. Steely gray-blues and that cocky expression, and the designer suits that made him an unmistakable sight. Lucas dropped the paper and took out his phone, dialed a number that was already fed into it.

“How’re you, Chloe?”

“I’m fine, Luke. If you’re calling something must be wrong. What is it?”

“Nothing’s wrong,” Lucas said. “I mean, it might be nothing for all I know. But I have a hunch. Wanted to confirm it.”

“Tell me what you need?”

“Remember Daniel Jones?”

“Doesn’t ring a bell.”

“Daniel Jones? Tall guy, designer suits? Con-artist? Remember the Jonathan Harper case?”

“Oh yeah! I remember now. Didn’t he get arrested?”

“Well, he’s out obviously,” Lucas said. “I’m looking at a news story about him.”

“Has he done something?”

“No,” Lucas said. “But I think he might be conning someone I know.”

“Look you know Daniel comes with his contacts. If the system had to let him go, I don’t know what I can do for you.”

“Chloe, I just want information.”

“Okay. Information I can do.”

“Thank you.”

“No problem. What do you need me to find out?”

Lucas pondered over it for a second, trying to figure out his next move. “I want you to keep an eye on my friend. See if Jones is up to something. Can you do that?”

“I can do that. See if Jones is back to his old ways.”

“That’s more than enough for now.”

“What’s your friend’s name?”

Lucas paused. “Roman,” he said. “Roman Woodrow.”

“You’re kidding?”

“No, I’m not.”

“If you’re friends with Roman Woodrow, net worth $2.8 billion, why aren’t you conning him?”

“Because, I’m not a con. I don’t trick people out of their money.”

“No, you only kill them.”

“Chloe! Phone! For goodness sake, what the hell is wrong with you?”

“I’m sorry, okay. This is a secure line, don’t worry about it. In any case, I’ll see what I can do.”

“Bring me back something solid, something I can work with.”

“Luke, I get that you’re trying to help your friend, and that’s really noble of you and everything. But let’s get real for one second here. Daniel Jones doesn’t pick just anyone. He has a type. If your friend fits the bill, I’m afraid there’s not much you can do. Jones is smart. My guess is, he’s probably sunk his teeth into your friend already. If you go after him, Jones comes after you, things get complicated. And with your history, you can’t afford complications, not if you want to stay out of jail. You’ve been doing it for this long, don’t mess it up for some guy.”

“He’s not just some guy, Chloe.”

“Shit.”

“What?”

“You’re serious about him, aren’t you?”

“What do you think?”

“What the hell, Luke? I heard you were planning something with Scott. How does that fit in?”

“I’ll figure it out.
