Chapter 21

Escape proved to be a challenge. When I returned to the control room, Nora took up residence beside me and was on me like a mother hen.

“You need to eat something.” She passed a plate of fruit in front of me and tore a hunk of bread off a loaf. From her hip pouch where she kept essentials, she pulled out a small tin I recognized from home. “Some royal jelly will give you a boost.” Grateful for both the sustenance and the little taste of home, I returned the smile and thanked her as I took the bread—all the while trying to reach out to Maggie with my healing energy.

Uncertain of how remote healing worked, I tried to sense Maggie’s signature essence, but nothing came to me. Maybe I was too far away or perhaps homing in on her among so many other people was impossible, but I had no sense that she was injured or sick. Frustrated, I bit into a piece of apple and focused to the front where Sam and Dalton were talking with Agent Simms, who had arrived with her fellow Condor pilots.

The general was assigning tasks to everyone, but was clearly excluding me, whom he apparently considered an asset for after the fight when a healer would be of use. Antsy to reach Maggie, it seemed I was on my own—unless I wanted to enlist Will’s help on my mission. That idea was squashed when I observed him, already in warrior mode. Caught up in the energy of the planning, he stood tall beside the others, laser- focused on every detail.

I sighed. It was clear I wasn’t needed here and the note had instructed me to come alone. Maggie must have had her reasons for wanting only me.

Besides, I already knew the plan. Storm the gates, kill the bad guys, and take control. There were far better fighters, people vastly more qualified for the task than I, a sixteen-year-old healer with the inability to take a life with intent. I had no place in battle and would only be a liability, since I’d proven myself useless as a killer. My insides twisted at the thought of Will joining the fight without me by his side, but there would be no stopping him.

If I included Will in my plan to go into Gettysburg to help Maggie, I’d once again be asking him to abort his mission to rescue his father. I couldn’t expect him to make that choice again. He might even try to prevent me from going. Or would he sacrifice his own plans and have yet one more reason to resent me? I sighed again and reconciled myself to going it alone.

Under the guise of helping clean up after dinner, I stacked my arms full of plates and cups and left the planning room, letting Sam know I was turning in for the night—too tired to take in any more information. He barely acknowledged me as I left the room. Will gave
