And that was how she found herself on the top floor of a beach-themed hotel, looking over the lights of the Gold Coast with Simon Purdy. On the horizon, the lights of ships glowed as they chugged up and down the coast. Behind them the planes were coming in to land.

Simon put two steaming chai teas down and slung his big frame into the high stool.

‘You’re buying for me again. Thank you.’

‘You’re welcome. You’ve had a big week with your sister. So Kate’s the first baby in the family?’

She took a sip of the tea. Hot and soothing. ‘My niece? Yes. I’ve only the one sister. Our mother died when we were young.’

‘Like Malachi and me. Both our mothers died early too, and if it wasn’t for Millicent, Malachi would have had no warmth in his life at all. That’s why Lisandra is such a joy.’

‘Makes sense.’ Isabella huffed a sad laugh. ‘Sounds like my world. My father was too busy for either of us after my mother was gone. If it wasn’t for my grandmother...’ Her words trailed off as she thought of Gran then and Gran now.

‘That must make it doubly hard for you to see her so ill.’

Simon’s words were quiet, not over-sentimental. It was as if he knew not to be too sympathetic or she might cry.

The thought eased the tightness in her throat caused by his words.

Isabella lifted her chin and looked at him. ‘We went to boarding school, but Gran was the one who took us on holidays. Made sure we knew about cuddles and hugs. She’s the person I love most in the world.’

‘I bet she has some stories about you.’

Isabella surprised herself when she laughed. He had such a way of lifting her up. ‘She does. But what about you? You lost your mother? What was your childhood like?’

His face closed. ‘No memories of my mother. She died when I was born. I don’t think my father ever forgave me for that.’
