I knock on the door, ready to have a conversation I should have had weeks ago. I donât understand why theyâve been so absent, so neglectful, but I need answers. When I told Wyatt of my plans, I didnât expect my first obstacle to be finding out where they lived. Luckily, Malcolm knew.
âLottie,â my grandma says, surprised. âCome on in. What are you doing here?â
âHi,â I say, a tense smile in place. âIs granddad home?â
âBrett!â she shouts as she leads me into the kitchen. Even though we originally didnât get off on the best footing, sheâs been warm and supportive, just like my granddad. Their house, though, is kind of cold, detached. More modern than what Iâd expect, but nice.
As she prepares tea, my granddad comes down the stairs, grinning at me. âHi sweetheart. What are you doing here? And why did you leave that Alpha of yours outside?â
âCaden arrived after I did,â I mutter, not sure how to explain the situation. I stand up and give him a hug as my grandma brings over tea in a teapot with china mugs. This is what I expected when I came here today. Posh tea with biscuits.
âSo, what can we do for you?â my grandma asks, sounding a little tense since theyâve asked this more than once.
âWhy arenât you two helping?â
They exchange a look, one singular look that I know allowed them to get their story straight. One singular, shared glance and they can communicate effortlessly.
I miss that.
âWhy did you decide to come here today?â my grandma asks. âItâs nearly been a month since the event.â
âBecause I held a pack meeting with your pack, and neither of you attended. Because Dadâs struggling, and Malcolmâs barely hanging on. Because the Council are coming in two days, and I have no idea how Iâm going to get through that visit. Because I need help, and I donât know who else to turn to.â
âWeâre always going to be your support,â my grandad says, smiling. âLottie, the reason weâve took a step back is because the wolves in Golden Eclipse donât need us. Weâre the past, youâre their future. Every parent knows when their input is needed, and sometimes theyâre right and sometimes theyâre wrong. Weâre doing our best for your dad, but by extension, youâre our baby too.â
âAnd you donât need coddling. You donât need us at your back, sweetie. You need your mates,â my grandma says, holding her teacup with her pinkie finger extended out. âUs interfering with Golden Eclipse would only cause you to pull back.â
âAnd although times are tough, you needed thrown in at the deep end. Youâre the heir to this pack, and yes, your mates will be Alphas, but youâre going to be their leader. If you truly needed us, weâd have been there.â
âI need you now,â I say. âThe Council are concerned that theyâve not managed to speak to my men.â
âAs they should be,â my grandad says. âBut thatâs not the issue. Thatâs going to be their reason to get an invite here, but that isnât why they truly want to come.
