Every bent bright head
Burning
With merciless desire
Every pure heart
Seared
By the scorching black fire (dragon kiss?)
Of your glaring eyes
He nodded and then grimaced.
Lune, you pathetic old twit, he told himself while slinking under the bed-sheets and switching the windows dark. Angels and eternal bliss, really? Hoof-rasps and manure-shovels are more in your line, mate. That boy will tie your brain into a pretzel, eat your heart for snacks, and then go off with some other stunner from the gym. That’s what. He settled in the pillow and closed his eyes, massaging his lids with his palms.
Well, at least he’ll never read that wretched drivel you keep on scribbling, he thought just before going to sleep.

So we are leaving five days from now. I am all packed and ready! We almost hit a wall today, to be honest, when he said that I should leave Kzar behind. The great nag expert! You gotta be kidding me! I raised Kzar since he was this big, and he’s the best horse in the yard! He says he was planning on picking a good, steady horse for me. A reliable good keeper with a cool headpiece, he says, by which he means some fat ugly beast, half-blind in two eyes and lame on all four feet. I can pick my own, thanks! Anyway, I got kinda pissed, well, very, and told him exactly where he could shove his steady horse, at which point he just threw his hands in the air with this philosophical look, and said, “Ok then, sometimes the kindest thing you can do for a bloke is give him a chance to make a fool of himself.” What is that supposed to mean? Well, never mind. I am sorry I shouted at him, poor bugger. He means well. But he’s got the weirdest notions about horses and stuff. Oh, and he’s got these really cool green eyes, sad-like, but hard also. Holy shit, he could stare a bloke down at a thousand yards with those beamers. I never noticed before, because he’s got this weird way not to look into my eyes when he talks. Sometimes I want to grab him and shake him and shout at him. “Look at me, damn! Look at me! Look at me!” Well, today he looked at me, but just because he was pissed. Ouch. Oh, screw it. LL77 ether-cast 670 Over.

The morning of the departure Lune saddled his tall bay gelding, Ramon, and the chestnut mare. The saddlebags were ready and loaded; the horses were frisky and eager to go, and as he waited for Laz’law to get out of the stable yard with his grey stud, he saw Aubrey walking up to say good-bye.
“So he’s going to ride the mare?” asked Aubrey, observing with emphatic approval the two horses.
“Eventually,” said Lune, evenly.

A week out in the desert, they set up their camp in the lee of a high dune, and walked around a while to look at the sparse local flora. As Lune knew very
