In any language—Paasfeest, Ostern, Pasqua, Uskrs, Paskalya—Easter basically means the same thing: Christ is risen!

To express this magnificent belief, Christians observe different traditions based on their ethnic backgrounds and cultural history. Some communities stress the joy of Easter stemming from Jesus’ resurrection, while others concentrate more on the sorrow of the season, keeping Christ’s sacrifice on the cross in the forefront.

Picturing the resurrection through a show of both jubilation and solemnity comes in many forms: concerts, special dances, church services, specific foods, and sacred rituals. Although each vibrant Easter symbol, custom, and image might be meaningful to the cultures that use them, each one ultimately does one thing—tells the world of our deliverance from the bondage of sin and the curse of death. As Jesus said to Martha, “ ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even if he dies’ ” (John 11:25 NIV).

Easter traditions, simply put, are the visible expressions of what the New Testament describes as the mission of all Christians—“to call people from among all the Gentiles to obedience that comes through faith” (Romans 1:5 NIV). Easter, therefore, is not only a worldwide celebration, it is an international season of evangelism. It is, especially for children, also a great time of fun.
