As the sun began finally began its descent, casting long, flickering shadows upon the water, we rounded a bend in the river and our destination came into view. Rising from the sea of green was the imposing fortress of San Felipe de Lara. Its stone ramparts, unyielding and gray, were a stark contrast to the vibrant greenery that surrounded it, an unwelcome monument to the persistent and often ruthless Spanish ambition.

Instead of heading straight for the fort, I signaled for the helmsman to steer the ship towards a hidden cove, a secret shared with us by stolen charts. Nestled between two large outcroppings and concealed from the garrison's view by the curve of the river and overhanging foliage, it was the perfect place to anchor and wait for the protective cloak of darkness.
