She raised a hand to shield her eyes from the blinding light. As her vision adjusted, she noticed shadow creatures hovering at the edge of the stone lookout. She reached for her pentacle, her touchstone, but it wasn’t there. Instead, she saw Harrison’s body sprawled at the base of the stairs, his eyes open in a silent moan. Then, his light extinguished.

A man materialized beside her under a clear blue sky. He wore clothes like Harrison’s, but she didn’t recognize his face. He clutched her shoulder. “You have to help me.”

“How are you touching me?” she asked, her voice shaky.

“This is a dream, Charlie,” the spirit said. “I can do anything I want here.”

“Who are you?”

“I need your help,” he repeated, urgency in his voice.

“Okay, I can help you, but you have to tell me who you are.”

“Pete McAllister.” He planted his hands on his hips and looked around. “This is all wrong. This shouldn’t be happening to me.”

“What shouldn’t be happening?”

“I shouldn’t be dead. You have to help me.”

“I’m so sorry,” she faltered, “but it seems you are.”

The spirit drifted closer to Harrison’s body. “That’s me.”

“I don’t think so,” Charlie countered. “That’s Harrison. He died this morning.”

“I know, but it’s me,” he insisted, his dark eyes hollow and pleading. “You have to help me.”

The air chilled as he placed his hands on her shoulders, freezing her in place.

“Don’t touch me!” She attempted to pull away, but his grip held her fast, and her feet refused to move.

A hiss echoed in her head.

“Hold him,” Ben Azrael hissed.

Charlie’s gaze darted around until it landed on Ben Azrael. He circled the lookout, using his scythe to dispatch shadow creatures, their growls dying as they vanished.

“Oh my God.” McAllister gasped as Ben Azrael closed in on him.

He released Charlie and backed away.

“Come with me,” Ben Azrael commanded.

“No! I’m not supposed to be dead.” McAllister vanished, leaving Ben Azrael slashing at the air.

He turned on Charlie, his eyes blazing.

“This is all your fault. You shouldn’t be here!” He charged at her, but he dissipated with a dull roar just before impact.

Charlie shot upright, drenched in sweat and panting. The rhythmic lull of the ocean filled the room, and she took several deep breaths of the warm sea air. Her heart rate returned to normal, and she looked around. The bed was empty, the folding doors open. She left the bed, making her way onto the balcony where Tom sat at the bistro table, feet propped up on the railing.

“Hi,” she murmured.

Tom swiveled to face her.

“Hi.” He cocked his head. “What’s wrong?”

“Just a bad dream. A weird one.” She scrubbed the sleep from her eyes. “I think today’s events got to me more than I realized.”

Tom extended a hand and opened his arms. “Want to talk about it?”

Charlie ignored his invitation. Instead, she sat in the empty chair before relaying the dream. Tom put his elbows on the table and listened with an intent gaze.

“I wonder who the ghost is?”

“We can check to see if Pete McAllister’s staying at the resort.
