Chapter Eleven

The clock in the living room was ticking, its pointers showed that it was almost 1 a.m. The living room was dark and quiet, like the rest of the house. Laura and Richard forgot to turn off the lights in the hall before they went to bed, so the lights there were on. Daniel woke up two minutes past 1 a.m. and stared at the dark space in front of him. He didn’t see much, but he saw the shapes of his parents lying next to him, and the edge of the bottom of the bed in front. His father, who was laying on the right side of him, snored lightly and breathed heavily. Daniel tried to focus on the door. His eyes had just adjusted to the darkness as the door opened, slowly, and he began to see the room and the shapes of things in front of him more clearly. The master bedroom was quite spacious, there was a dark-brown coloured wardrobe on the right side of the bed. On the other side, in the left corner there was a modern, black office chair standing in front of a table with some shelves above it filled with books and binders. Most of them belonged to Laura. Further to the right, there were a couple of more shelves and a white bathroom door that was closed. Daniel sat quietly, staring at the opened door. Suddenly, the shadow of the young girl appeared on the illuminated parquet floor. She stood there for about one second before she walked away in the same direction she came from. Daniel moved slowly to the bottom of the bed and climbed over it. He tried to be as quiet as possible while he was stepping closer to the door. He reached out his left arm and put the left palm of his hand on the door, then he leaned forward to get a glimpse of what was going on out there. He hesitated at once and straightened up his body fast, he was afraid that the girl might have been standing there, somewhere in the hall looking at him. He was tensed and frightened, but his curiosity made him push forward to clarify what he saw. He started leaning to the right side slowly again. He made sure to only expose his right eye while looking to the left side where he thought he saw the girl moving. And quite correct; ten feet to the left, she was standing there facing the door to the basement that was wide open. She lifted her left, naked foot and stepped down in front of her. She went slowly down to the basement and was soon out of sight.

Daniel was stunned. He moved slowly out to the hall while keeping his left hand on the door. He was not sure about what to do. His body trembled a bit, but he didn’t sense it. He focused and pulled himself together before he tip-toed slowly towards the passage that led to the basement.
