THE GHOST at Kent Manor Inn is that of Thompson himself: old Alexander Thompson, the original owner of the plantation back in the early 1800s. Thompson, after whom the nearby creek is named, was an extremely heavy smoker, so much so that he sometimes seemed to exist in a cloud of blue smoke.

His own bedroom, the room in which he died, is now Room 209. A century or so has passed since Thompson died, but Room 209 still carries a lingering scent of tobacco. No one is known to have smoked within its walls for years. Staff cannot eliminate the odor, no matter what they do.

Thompson seems to be the cause of some strange occurrences at the inn, too. Playful in life, he is playful still. Staff have reported being trapped in Room 209 by a table inexplicably pushed in front of the door. Lights flicker on and off for no apparent reason.

Thompson likes life to be lively. His tricks happen most often when the house is quiet. And it’s when there are few people about and there is not much going on that a number of witnesses, including members of staff and two former owners, have reported seeing Thompson himself. On each occasion, he simply watches from a dim corner.

By contrast, he also enjoys a good wedding. The inn is a favorite place for celebrating marriages, and Thompson is often spotted at these ceremonies, joining in the fun as an extra, if intangible, guest.
