Chapter Six

The next day the four of them—Lana, Lucy, Tony, and Davide—got together to plan the event. Lana and Tony had dinner at his place while Lucy and Davide strolled the grounds, reminiscing about old times. Tony promised to call his older brother Derek and get him to the house on the appointed day.

Lana was pretty sure it wasn’t Derek who killed Davide. His alibi had checked out according to the police reports, but she still wanted him there. He could know something and not realize it. It would’ve been hard for Derek to have driven the distance from Raleigh to Charleston and then driven back in time enough to have an alibi. Not impossible but improbable.

The polished red-oak dining table appeared larger with only Tony at the head and Lana to his right. After dinner, he reached over and placed his hand atop hers. “Lana, I’d like to see a lot more of you once this is over. You’re one of a kind, you know. Not too many women would’ve taken on a twenty-year-old murder mystery and solved it.”

“I haven’t solved anything yet.” Lana didn’t know what else to say. She felt unworthy of such praise. There was still too much to do. While she wanted to see more of him, too, she couldn’t allow herself to think of it now. At least not until they had solved this case. It was not the time to think of herself or what her heart desired.

“Will you see me again? We could go on a cruise or take trips to London, Paris, Rome, Ireland or anywhere else you want to go.”

Lana slipped her hand out from under his. “I-I don’t know. Tony, you’re a wonderful, sweet man—”

“I don’t think I want to hear this. I'm not psychic but I can feel a but coming.” He narrowed his brows.

“I can’t mix work with pleasure. Besides, it’ll be years before I can afford to take a trip like that.”

His smile was out of this world—blue eyes sparkling, white teeth flashing and a dark complexion that would make a Greek god cry with jealousy. “You won’t have to pay for anything. I want to take you.”

“Out of the question. I pay my own way or I don’t go.” She wrung her hands in her lap.

“You’ll go then?” He flashed another smile.

“Weren’t you listening? I’ll go only when I can afford it.”

“It’s a date!”

“Wait a minute. I said it would be years.”

“I can wait. In the meantime, we can dine together, right?” Tony leaned over the table. “Maybe play tennis, golf, cards, chess or anything you’d like.”

He caressed her cheek with his palm and reached deeper into the thick masses of her hair, coaxing her toward him. His lips covered hers, his tongue teasing the inside of her mouth as if in search for her very soul.

She enjoyed the warmth and tenderness of his touch. Her heart raced, drumming deep within her chest, moving down into the bottom of her belly. Another moment and her entire body pulsed.
