COOPER TOOK BRAD WITH HIM FOR HIS pre-tourist rounds, allowing the older man to chatter away nonstop as they circled the town and made sure it was ready for a rush of visitors. He nodded when he felt it was appropriate, made sympathetic clucking sounds, and even reassured Brad that Hannah was indeed happy and wasn’t just putting on a front.

He’d pretty much made up his mind to delay the inevitable when he shifted course and went for it. There was no sense putting it off, he realized.

“There’s something I want to talk to you about,” Cooper blurted out.

Brad, who had been busy looking at the slope beneath the lift that would bring up the tourists, immediately straightened. “I knew there was something you were hiding. Out with it. Is Hannah in trouble?”

Cooper hesitated, wondering how deeply he should delve into their current situation. “Actually, by Casper Creek standards, it’s been a quiet week,” he said finally. “That’s sad when you think about it, but there it is. I want to talk to you about something else entirely.”

Suddenly, Brad was wary. “You’re not going to tell me about your feelings, are you?”

Cooper swallowed the urge to laugh. Ultimately, this wasn’t going to be a funny conversation. “Actually, I am.”

“Oh, geez.” Brad pinched the bridge of his nose and turned his attention to the spectacular view. “This is where you tell me you love Hannah more than anything, right?”

Cooper nodded without hesitation. “I love her more than I ever thought possible. She’s ... everything to me.”

“You’re going to promise to never hurt her,” Brad said on a sigh.

“Not on purpose,” Cooper agreed. “Honestly, if I thought I could make it through life without ever hurting her, I would be ecstatic. That’s not realistic, though. There are going to be times when I hurt her feelings. All I can promise is that I will never do it on purpose.”

“That’s something at least.”

“It is, and there’s more.”

Brad didn’t say anything. He simply waited.

“I’m going to ask Hannah to marry me.”

Brad’s eyebrows winged up. “You’ve been dating for all of two months.”

“We’ve been dating longer than that. I don’t believe the length of a relationship matters in the grand scheme of things, though, so that’s neither here nor there. It’s the feelings that count, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that she’s my soulmate.”

“If you start spouting poetry, I’m going to pop you one,” Brad warned.

Cooper ignored him. He understood that Brad knew what was coming and this was simply a way for him to deflect the serious discussion that was about to descend upon them. Cooper had no intention of backing down now.

“I know I’m supposed to ask your permission, that it’s the polite thing to do, but I’m afraid you’re going to say no,” Cooper explained.

“It’s too soon.” Brad was insistent. “Wait a year and then ask me.”

“I’m not waiting a year.” That sounded like pure torture to Cooper. “In fact, I can’t wait a year to marry her. I want to be with her forever, and I want that forever to start soon.
