After an eventful thirty minutes of Jackson painting the street a dark shade of green, the guys were snoring in the car. We were close to home, and I planned on stunning them awake with a blast of heavy metal as payback for all the shit they gave me.

As I turned into our neighborhood, my mind immediately drifted to Alyssa and her strange fascination with this place. I had to admit, I’d never walked down the street at night without hearing the backdrop of one of my parties behind. Little porch lights lit the way to our house like little beacons, and for a split-second I could understand why Alyssa was so intent on saving it. It was charming, and there was a fondness in my chest when I thought about all the memories I’d made here, but the amount of money that could be made by breaking it down was too appealing for me to just ignore.

As I turned into our driveway, my headlights reflected onto Alyssa’s porch, and to my surprise, I saw her. The light illuminated her bright blonde hair stuffed high on top of her head in a bun as she rocked on her old porch swing. The girl had a death wish. There was no doubt in my mind that the swing was hanging by a thread, and yet she was putting her life in its hands.

I looked down at the screen, checking the temperature because no one with working heat would ever choose to sleep out here over their home.

The guys still hadn’t woken, so I left my music prank for another day, and made leaving them to freeze in the car their payback instead. As I quietly got out, I closed the door as gently as I could, as not to disturb them.

I could just go inside and leave Alyssa in peace, but I swatted away that idea because after the night I’d had, seeing her face was the only thing that would make me feel alive and in control.

I slowed as I walked up her path because it was becoming clearer that she was sleeping under that white, fluffy blanket. She’d left her book open on top of the blanket, teetering over the edge with the potential to wake her up if it fell.

Typical Alyssa. She was spread out and vulnerable. Unaware and unprepared for the dangers that lurked close by.

I stepped around the creaky boards on her porch, knowing exactly which ones would wake her, and stood about a foot away, watching as the blanket rose and fell with her breathing.

To say she looked beautiful like this would be an understatement, but there was still something missing. She was too quiet and peaceful. Even the crease at the top of her forehead was gone.

I missed her smart mouth, and all the things I imagined it doing.

I raised my lips because she had no idea a big bad wolf was watching her, ready to gobble her up.

Again.

God, did she taste good. It was taking everything in me not to wake her from her slumber by tasting her again right here.
