Hi Simon and Alex,

I’d like to interview you, together or separate, to get your view on how it’s been in school this week, how you think things may change on the ice as the team heads for state, and anything else you might like to say about being among a relatively small number of out hockey players in high school or college.

I’m available pretty much anytime if you guys want to talk, so just shoot me an email or track me down at school.

Thanks for the consideration,

Mike

“So what do you think?” Alex asked as we drank coffee in “our” IHOP booth. The place was pretty empty since we were in between the after school rush and the dinner crowd.

“I don’t know. Do we want to be that out there? I mean, if we’re trying not to make a big deal out of this, it seems like this makes it a big deal.”

“It could be good. You know, put the story out there once and for all.”

Mike’s email was a surprise. He always seemed more obsessed with stats and how the teams were doing in the division rather than anything going on outside the game. He and I talked a lot, usually after every game and sometimes after practices. It was usually Leo or Coach with the quotes, but I could see the influences of our chats in his stories. Alex and I, however, didn’t seem the type of thing he’d want to write about.

“Stand up and be counted,” Alex continued after I’d been quiet for a while. “Out, proud, all that stuff.”

“I suppose.”

I wasn’t convinced. The week was already weird enough and I wasn’t sure this would help.

“Look, all I want to do is finish high school, go to college, play some hockey, and be with you. I don’t necessarily need the rest of the world along on that ride.”

He nodded and took a drink.

“You know, if we do it, it could help someone else who might be in love with his linemate.”

Alex had the look he gets when he wanted me to go along with something. I don’t know how he put that look into his eyes, but I couldn’t resist and he knew it. He had a point, too. If there’d been someone before it would’ve been easier for us, in the same way we made it okay for Craig and Kyle.

“Okay, I’m in.”

“And we don’t have to answer what we don’t want to. I’ll shoot him an email.” He pulled out his phone and typed. “I’ll tell him to give me a call to set it up.”

“We’re doing this together, right?”

“Absolutely. Unless you’ve got a secret you need to tell.”

“I can’t tell you that, because then it wouldn’t be secret.”

I winked at him and in response he threw a balled up napkin at me. His phone vibrated.

“Hello? Hey, Mike. That was fast.” He listened, nodding his head occasionally. Finally, he covered the phone. “He wants to interview us now if that’s okay.”

I shrugged. “Sure. Might as well do it before I can change my mind.
