Chapter Four

REED STRETCHED. HE’D gone to bed before Matt only because he hadn’t been able to keep his eyes open. He glanced over at Matt’s sleeping form, then at the clock. Six in the morning. He sighed. He hated waking up so early, but his darn internal clock had become very precise. If he managed to sleep past six thirty, he was lucky. He stared at the ceiling. He could lie in bed and flop around, but that would only wake up Matt. Nah. Matt needed his rest.

Reed disengaged from Matt, then climbed out of bed. He grabbed the first pair of sleep pants and a T-shirt emblazoned with a football helmet. He lumbered out to the kitchen and measured coffee grounds. He couldn’t function without his java.

A knocking at the front door grabbed his attention. What the hell? He crept into the living room and peeked around the thick curtains covering the glass panels on either side of the front door. A man with stringy black hair stood on the stoop.

“I know you’re home,” the man said. He smoothed his wrinkled suit coat.

Reed froze. He hadn’t made any noise when he’d left the bedroom. How did the guy know he was there? Reed flattened his palms on his thighs. Matt said to stay quiet. Was this the same guy?

“I can make all your dreams come true if you open the door. The crowd you want to run from? I can make it all go easier. The store you want to sell? I have a buyer.” The man folded his hands together. “Your life can be brand new.”

Although the idea of making his life easier did appeal to him, he refused. He didn’t need a new life. He liked the existence he already had and wouldn’t trade it. Besides, the guy on the stoop reminded him of the man from the bookstore who said he wanted to make Reed’s life easier by buying the business. Something wasn’t right...or the guy was a stalker.

“Come on,” the man said. “You know you’re scared. Give in and come outside.”

Reed plastered himself to the wall away from the door. Hell yes, he was scared. A bizarre man was talking about easing his fears and shit. Reed wanted nothing to do with him. Where was his phone? He needed to call the police.

“One last shot. Do you want help? All of your dreams and wishes will come true.”

He’d pass.

“Stupid humans,” the man said to himself. He stepped off the porch. “They’ll never learn. They actually think they rule the universe. They rule nothing.”

Reed watched the guy walk down the road. He didn’t move until the man was out of sight.

“What are you doing?”

At the sound of Matt’s voice, Reed jerked. He gasped and slapped both hands over his mouth. He nudged Matt away from the door. “Remember that guy you warned me about? He was here.”

“Seriously?” Matt blurted. “I’m calling the cops.”

That would’ve been a good thing to do, had he thought of it in time.
