a gymnast—i bet she can do all kinds of things

there’s a look that she gets. like there’s an animal inside her—just waiting to get out.

of all the girls, harleen’s the one i want the most.

I see it all differently now. Especially that night at his house, after the party.

We talk and talk and talk about science. And he keeps pouring more wine for himself, sometime before the other two professors leave. No, after they’re already gone.

“How ’bout you stay and have some dessert?”

He’s smiling, and I want to do what he says. He’s the kind of person you can’t say no to, his students flocking around him like he’s the leader of a cult.

When he goes to the kitchen to get us some dessert, I wait in my chair patiently. And when he comes back with the flourless chocolate cake and sits back down next to me, I pretend the only reason he scoots his chair closer is so it’ll be easier to share the cake. I ignore how he gets this flash of hunger in his eyes when I accidentally moan over my first bite (it really was a damn good cake). Because he’s talking to me like I’m an equal. And I want him to keep talking to me like I’m an equal. I want to BE an equal.

And then he says it. Well past midnight. Cheeks red. Eyes bright.

“You know,” he says. “You know, I think you might be the most brilliant scientific mind I’ve seen in a long time.”

I’m so overcome with emotion that I squeeze his hand impulsively. Our eyes meet. The moment stretches and sharpens and sizzles.

“Hey, it’s getting late.” He looks up from his glass with a sleepy grin. He even stretches. “Are you sure you don’t want to spend the night? In the guest bedroom, of course. I just want to make sure you get home safely, even if that means tomorrow morning.”

On the train ride home, I repeat the words most brilliant scientific mind in my head, over and over and over and over and the doors to the train open and the doors to the train close.

I tell myself he was only offering for me to stay over to be nice. He didn’t mean it the way I think he meant it.

I tell myself it is the best day of my entire life.
