CHAPTER NINE

SEBASTIAN PULLED ON the crisp white shirt, sleeve by sleeve, and buttoned it up in front of the mirror. He studied his jawline in the light, frowning at his reflection. He should have shaved, but it would have to do. He could use a haircut, too.

‘How do I look?’ he asked, sweeping the curtain aside dramatically and squaring his shoulders in the tailor-made suit. ‘Do you think anyone would guess I spend half my life in scrubs and the other half in a wetsuit?’

Mila stood up from the plush white seat. She put the book of designs down on the table, next to a dish of frangipanis. Her eyes appraised the navy blue pinstripe jacket and he realised, feeling some small element of doubt over his own sanity, that even though he knew he looked good he was still seeking her approval.

She trailed her gaze up his body, from shoes to shirt collar, not giving anything away. ‘What’s the occasion?’ she asked.

‘My mother’s seventieth birthday party. I have to go back to Chicago.’

He hadn’t asked her to accompany him, of course. Maybe he would have done if she hadn’t spent most of the last week trying to avoid him.

She raised her eyebrows. ‘I recall you mentioning something about that. When is that? Before or after I leave the island?’

‘I don’t think we’ve talked about your exact leaving dates yet, have we?’ he said evasively.

Mila seemed closed off—distracted, even—so now was clearly not the time to discuss it. She was glancing at the rain outside, and the palms lashing at the tailor’s windows. There was a storm on the way, all right. It was only supposed to be a quick downpour, but…

‘This is definitely getting worse,’ she announced, right as his cell phone buzzed again.

It was the delivery guy, delaying the monitor’s arrival yet again.

‘They might not get it to us till the morning now,’ he told her with a frown.

Mila looked like a deer who wanted nothing more than to run away from his headlights. ‘What will we do till then?’

‘You stay here. I make something for you,’ the tailor cut in. ‘Something beautiful. I think blue is your colour!’

Mila turned, holding up her hand. ‘Oh, no, that’s OK. I don’t have anything to…’

‘It not take long.’

Sebastian watched Mila in the mirror as Anya, his favourite tailor, bustled off to the storeroom. She came back three seconds later with armfuls of fabric. Before Mila could dissuade her, the tailor was pulling out a tape measure, holding her arms out one by one, whirring around her in her patterned sarong. Then Anya got to her knees and measured each leg, then her hips, waist and bust—quickly, efficiently, enthusiastically.

‘You look at designs. I get you samples!’

‘Get something made. We can have someone bring it over to the island later,’ he told Mila.

He’d been coming here for years, but he’d never brought a woman with him. No wonder they were treating her like royalty.

She shook her head though, resolute. ‘No, really… I don’t need anything, Sebastian.
