CHAPTER SIX

A SOUND ECHOED in the hallway, and Carter spun his chair to face the door of the clinic. He waited, but Helena didn’t walk through the door, so he tried to return his focus to the words in Keith’s email. Their shift didn’t start for another fifteen minutes, but he’d been here for almost an hour.

He’d tossed and turned all night. The few times that he’d fallen asleep, he’d dreamed that he’d leaned forward to kiss Helena. And his dream had ended the same way each time, with him pulling back just before his lips met hers. It was deeply unsatisfying and disconcerting and not conducive to resting at all.

For the millionth time, his brain reminded him that he’d sworn not to get close to Helena—at least not in any way that was more than as a friendly colleague. But his heart wasn’t interested in listening to the rationale.

“Good morning, Carter.” Helena’s voice was bright as she stepped into the clinic carrying a blueberry muffin and a yogurt smoothie. “You’re early today.” She playfully glanced at the clock as she sipped her smoothie.

“Or you’re late.” Carter chuckled as she wagged a finger in his direction. It was a motion she’d done so often when they were young. It had always made him and Owen laugh, because she was never cross with anyone. The motion was adorable, and so Helena.

“I am never late.” She pulled another yogurt smoothie from her backpack. “I swear I am constantly hungry!”

“It’s the pole. Those of us who work in the main building need to up our calorie load by about five hundred just to maintain weight, and the supply runners need to eat around six thousand calories a day.”

Carter had to constantly remind people they needed to eat enough calories, particularly the building staff. It was easy to get used to the cooler temps in the building and not realize that your body was working harder to keep you warm.

She leaned against the desk next to him and took another sip of the smoothie. “I remember that from the orientation packet, but you don’t realize how true it is until you’re on the ice!” She put the lid on the smoothie cup. Her fingers were millimeters from his.

It was ridiculous how much his pinkie ached to close the minuscule distance. His heart longed to throw years of caution away and take a chance. His throat was dry as she leaned closer to look at the screen, then pulled back quickly.

“Sorry, Carter. I thought you might have pulled our research paper off the server. I didn’t mean to look at a private email.” Her cheeks colored as she straightened. “There was no reason for me to think that. I just...”

“It’s fine. Just a note from Keith.” Carter grinned and tapped the file where the paper was located. “And it’s not like we haven’t started each morning with a quick look at it at least.”

Carter had found Helena at the computer typing away most mornings when he entered the clinic.
