CHAPTER NINE

IMOGEN WAS WATCHING Lev and Lexi. Something was up and she hoped it wasn’t bad news.

Lexi left and Lev returned.

“Is everything okay?” she asked.

“I think so.” But he hesitated like he wanted to tell her more and couldn’t.

Then she thought it might be the location of where they were standing. They were in the hall of the hospital and anyone could walk by.

“Do you need some air?”

“That would be great,” he said, sounding relieved.

They headed for the ambulance bay and stepped outside, where they were hit with cool crisp air, a sure sign that autumn was on its way. The cooler air was nice as they stood outside in the empty ambulance bay, taking in deep breaths.

“Seems early for this change in weather,” he remarked, but she had a feeling that wasn’t what he wanted to talk about.

“Autumn comes early here.” She’d noticed the other day some of the trees were starting to change color. “So, what did Lexi want?”

He smiled. “You don’t beat around the bush, do you?”

“I can’t help it.”

“Just word from my brother. He’s fine… Well, he’s more than fine. The situation in my country may be over soon.”

“Well, that’s wonderful!”

“Is it?” he asked, his voice tense.

“Isn’t it?” she asked, confused.

“I would have to leave.”

“Oh.” Then it hit her. He would leave her. Just like she’d known he would all along.

You knew this could happen.

The only reason they’d got married was for the baby, and though she knew he wanted her to go with him to Chenar, she wouldn’t leave Yellowknife.

This was her home.

“Imogen, right now I’m here,” he said as if reading her thoughts and trying to reassure her.

“Right.” His words did little to reassure her.

Nothing in life is permanent.

Except her home here. Yellowknife had never failed her.

“This is your home, Imogen,” her father had said. “Never forget that. Yellowknife has never failed us or let us down or left us. It’s home.”

“So is Lexi leaving, then?” she asked, clearing her throat, trying to forget all the self-doubt she was feeling.

“Yes. For now. Some restrictions have been lifted. I can’t leave the territory, but there’s no immediate threat and Lexi needs to go to my brother.”

“So you have some freedom?”

“A bit. Not much.”

“Maybe we can go together on my rounds in Fort Smith?” she suggested, trying to change the subject from him leaving her and their unborn child.

Lev smiled. “I’d like that. Work will help keep my mind off everything. I’d like to keep busy until…” He trailed off, but Imogen knew what he’d been about to say.

Until he left.

Even though she had built up these walls to protect her heart, it was hard to breathe at that moment. When had she let him in? She’d known this would happen, she’d reminded herself of it at every turn, so why was it so hard to contemplate him leaving?

You could go with him…

She shook that thought away. Her pulse thundered in her ears. It was deafening and she felt like she was going to be sick.

You knew this wasn’t forever.
