When Dom walked into his brother’s house, Rai winked at him. Dom’s brows lifted mockingly. ‘A facial tic after only two days’ marriage, brother?’

Rai’s startled laugh turned into a big grin. ‘Sì. Excellent joke. My brother is back?’

‘Accidenti!’ The most polite swear-word he could think of. First Isabel and now his brother, shocked that he had made a joke.

Rai continued, ‘So you carry the lovely Isabel everywhere now?’

‘I carry Isabel when she is foolish. Which she does not choose to be too often.’

‘Chloe tells us the motorbike whizzed past all of you very fast and smashed on the pole.’

Dom flinched. Felt his stomach clench at the remembered fear. ‘Sì. Too close.’

Rai stepped forward and he knew he had seen his distress. He touched his shoulder. ‘It was meant for you to be here then, Dom. Thank you for keeping Chloe and Isabel safe.’

Dom itched to divert the attention from himself and to lose the thoughts of Isabel’s near miss. That was too much. ‘How was your honeymoon?’

A pause and then his brother allowed the change of topic. ‘Short but no less perfect. My wife and I are very happy.’ Rai clapped him on the shoulder meaningfully. ‘It would be good to see you happy too.’

Dom shrugged. There was no answer to that. Yet. ‘I must pack. Your house is an excellent dwelling, but I am still moving out for the next two nights.’

‘Ridiculous. Stay here. We have many rooms. Or stay across the road and care for Isabel?’

‘I will come often. But I will sleep at the small accommodation I spoke about last week. We have had this discussion.’

Rai tilted his head and a sorrowful expression crossed his face. ‘What of Isabel? How will she manage?’

Dom narrowed his eyes at him. ‘I’m here if Isabel needs me. I believe she is desirous of her independence.’ He looked around as if something was missing. ‘And Chloe?’ Dom smiled. ‘You have been home for an hour and have lost her already?’

‘There are three ships close on the horizon and she is with her telescope.’

‘Then I too will see the ships on my way to my packing.’

‘Running away, brother?’ Rai’s voice followed him up the stairs.

‘Sì.’
