The clinic was a whir of activity as usual, and even the tinsel around the windows was swooshing in the frenzy. Ophelia’s father had been released from hospital in Brooklyn, and now he was resting at home under strict supervision to watch his diet. She felt a little better about things, and he’d insisted she not rush to see him. So with things being crazy busy at Base in the run-up to Christmas anyway, she’d agreed to wait a week for Jax and Cody.

Still, between patients and after her shifts, she’d declined the offer to go skiing with Jax. She knew the subject of her partnership would have to come up sooner or later. She needed to tell Jax about it herself, so he knew where he stood. So they both knew where they stood. She was taking the partnership.

She felt sick, just thinking about it. Why did it feel so wrong now? It wasn’t just because of Jax—it hadn’t felt right in a long time. She’d just never truly admitted it.

Ophelia fixed the IV for Louisa Holton, a netball coach from Boston who’d limped in with her girlfriend after knocking herself unconscious in the batting cage. Carson took over as Ophelia’s phone started ringing. He put a reassuring hand to her arm that told her it was OK, she could breathe.

It was snowing again outside and as usual she hadn’t taken much of a break till now. ‘I owe it to the team to carry on, especially as I’m leaving my responsibilities here to fly to New York with Jax and Cody. Can you believe Dad had a heart attack, Jordi?’

‘It was a mild one, and his heart came through unscathed. He’s going to be fine,’ Jordi reminded her. ‘Last I heard, he was even insisting you shouldn’t take time off to see him. Flights are so expensive around Christmas.’

‘Jax has a plane,’ she reasoned, but she wasn’t really thinking about that. ‘I should never have taken a job so far away.’

The mountain air felt good in her lungs. The skiers were weaving colourful lines through the fresh white snow and the Christmas lights twinkled around the confectionery stall up ahead. She was lying to herself and Jordi, voicing any regrets about being here, she realised. She just felt guilty that she loved it. All of it. She’d let herself drift so far away into Jax and Cody’s world that she’d left more than one of her father’s emails unopened over the past few weeks. The truth was
