* * *

Santi fed Sasha her afternoon meal and took her for a quick walk outside his apartment. Although he didn’t live in the hospital housing complex, he did run in the park regularly after work. He still did. He hadn’t come across Elena while doing so since that first morning, and he wondered if she’d chosen to run at another time to avoid him, or if it was just his screwed-up mind inserting things that shouldn’t be there. He couldn’t believe he’d kissed her in his office. It was impulsive and stupid, and while he might not always be the smartest human alive, one thing he prided himself on was not being impulsive.

And yet he had been.

So why Elena?

He didn’t know, and he didn’t care. But one thing he didn’t want to do was sit around and brood while eating a meal in front of the television. Making a quick call to Javier and Caitlin, he told them what Elena had figured out with Tomás. How quickly she’d figured it out still amazed him. That woman’s mind worked in ways he couldn’t begin to fathom.

“A tethered cord? I never even thought of that,” Javier said. They were on speakerphone so they both could hear and talk.

“I didn’t, either. Elle did, though. You were right about her figuring the hard ones out, Caitlin.”

“So it’s Elle now, is it?” Her voice contained a hint of slyness that Santi didn’t like. He didn’t want anyone getting any ideas. “We all use first names at Aelina, you know that. It would be awkward to call her Dr. Solis and everyone else by their given names.”

“I’m just teasing, Santi. Javier, how do you say ‘take a chill pill’ in Spanish?”

“Toma un tranquilizante.”

Caitlin laughed. “Well, that certainly fits. What Javier said, Santi.”

Take a tranquilizer? Seriously? In the background he could swear he heard them kissing, and it made his jaw set hard, a muscle pumping in his cheek. “Well, I won’t hold you up. When are you coming back to Barcelona?”

“Grace and Diego are having a renewal ceremony coming up on the beach. We wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Maldizion! Not another wedding. Technically Grace and Diego were already married, but they’d had some rocky times. He’d witnessed some of their frosty encounters firsthand. Evidently those days were over, something he’d missed. He forced himself to say something nice. “That’s great. I’m glad they’ve worked out their problems.”

“They have. Grace has already said she wants you there along with our other friends. She’s going to ask Elena as well. You’ll go, won’t you? I think she’d be sad if you didn’t.”

“Since I haven’t been invited yet, I’ll cross that bridge when it comes.”

Javier broke in. “I think our dinner reservations are soon, querida.”

“Okay, I think he’s telling me to get off the line, Santi. See you at the ceremony.”

“See you when you get back.” He left off anything that might hint at a promise on his part. If he could, he was going to make sure he had something scheduled whenever that beachfront ceremony was.
