CHAPTER EIGHT

THEY WERE EARLY to Immigration, but still ended up stuck in a line to file their paperwork. Marcus was trying not to yawn too much, but he hadn’t had the best sleep last night with Alexis being in the next room. So close, yet so far away.

All he could think about was Alexis and how much he wanted to have a real wedding night with her.

Last night had been wonderful. It was so great being with her and with Matthew and Victoria. It felt natural. Like they were meant to be a real family together.

He wanted more. Only he couldn’t have more. What if the biological father of Alexis’s baby came back? He didn’t know how long they had been married, but they had been together by choice.

There was love.

He remembered when he’d been in love with Dawna. He had been so happy.

So clueless.

And he couldn’t let himself fall for another woman who potentially might leave him for another man because it had hurt so much when Dawna left him.

He thought his heart had hardened since then, and yet when he was with Alexis, he felt like his heart was softening.

It scared him.

The immigration process went as well as could be expected, and they didn’t say much to each other as they headed outside and returned to the boat to sail back to St. John. There were a lot of things to do, like move Alexis onto the Tryphine.

Which meant, probably, many more sleepless nights.

As they were leaving, Marcus spied a heavily pregnant woman who seemed to be struggling up the steps to the government building. He glanced over at Alexis, who was watching the woman very closely.

“She looks like she’s in pain,” he said. “And her belly is quite low. I dare say that baby has dropped.”

“I’ll be right back,” Alexis murmured. She veered right over to the struggling pregnant woman and asked, “Do you need assistance?”

The woman was sweating. It was hot out, but she was perspiring profusely. It looked like she was struggling to even take deep breaths as she gripped the handrails.

“I’m okay... I...no, I’m just having really bad heartburn, but I have some...paperwork,” the woman panted.

Alexis motioned to Marcus to join her.

“Ma’am, I’m Dr. Olesen and this is Alexis, who is a midwife and nurse practitioner. I think we need to get you inside.”

The woman nodded, not fighting. “I’m Jill.”

“Jill, how far along are you?” Alexis asked as they helped her into the building.

“Forty-three weeks. A touch overdue,” Jill panted.

Alexis and Marcus shared a look.

The woman was more than overdue, and he had a feeling that this baby was going to be born in the government building. As they brought Jill through the doors and approached the metal detectors, the security guard stood to meet them.

“We need a room, a first-aid kit and please call an ambulance,” Alexis said firmly.

The guard nodded. “You can use the empty first-aid office at the end of the hall.”

As soon as Marcus and Alexis had helped Jill into the room, her water broke.
