ELSIE ROGERS STARED at the map. She’d been able to follow the directions Granger had given her through the mic, but they didn’t make sense.

Either he was wrong, or her map was. She had a bad feeling it was the map, and that it was very purposeful. Someone working against her.

She swallowed at the fear of that. How could she be working off a false map? And how could someone have the kind of access necessary to make that happen?

But now wasn’t the time for the who or how, it was the time for how did she fight against what someone was trying to do to stop her.

She looked back at the information Granger had given her. She’d written down every direction, and she knew where they’d started. Maybe her map was wrong, but she still had the right directions.

“They didn’t go where we thought they’d go.”

Elsie blinked at the speaker and then scrubbed at her eyes. She had to think. “No, they didn’t,” she said to Cody.

“That means we’re in the wrong position. We need to move.”

“Yeah.”

“Elsie, where are they?” he asked.

Panic threatened to spurt up inside of her, but she knew that Shay wouldn’t panic. Bad things happened, unexpected obstacles cropped up. A person had to stay calm and in control, no matter how worried they were about the people who might be in the crossfire.

“I don’t know where they are. My computer’s been tampered with.” She had to fight back the wave of fear and failure. Both wanted to win. She was a computer genius and now she couldn’t trust her computers.

But as long as Granger and Shay were alive she had the chance to bring them back home. She just had to figure out how to use do it.

She turned off her mic to Cody. “Betty?”

Betty Wagner, resident North Star doctor for the time being, poked her head into the room Elsie had commandeered for her computers. Useless computers at this point.

“We need a map of the area. Not your phone or a computer. A paper map.”

Betty frowned. “The gas station might have one, I guess.” She studied Elsie and then nodded. “I’ll go get one.”

“You have to be careful.”

Betty nodded. “I’ve learned a thing or two about stealth. Stay here. Listen to the team. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

It was Elsie’s turn to nod. Once Betty left she allowed herself one shaky breath and then swallowed. She straightened her shoulders and put her mic to Cody back on. “Okay, listen closely. This is what we’re going to do...”
