CHAPTER TWELVE

Mason straightened his tie and tugged his latest suit jacket into place outside the main entrance to the surgical waiting room. Alexandria’s Rapides Regional Medical Center was the closest level one trauma center to Beauchamp, but it had still been an hour and a half’s drive. Thankfully, the medical chopper got Landry here much faster than that. He was in surgery long before Hannah and her mother arrived, followed by her sisters. Mason had been delayed because he’d had to get special permission from the DA to leave the parish. Since Al was seated about ten feet from Hannah’s family, it was a good thing he’d taken that extra precaution. Otherwise, Al would probably arrest him. He still might try if Mason didn’t head him off.

A quick glance confirmed that Dalton and Bryson were inside the waiting room, discreetly keeping watch. But he didn’t see his newest Seeker, Eli. He was supposed to come here after bringing Mason a fresh suit that wasn’t covered with blood.

The sound of voices down the long main hallway had Mason looking that way. Eli was facing him, talking to a dark-haired man with his back to Mason. He seemed familiar, but at this distance, without being able to see his face, Mason didn’t have a clue who he was. When Eli spotted him, he said something else to the man, then hurried over.

“Hey, boss. The suit looks good.”

“I appreciate you bringing it.” He motioned toward the stranger who was continuing down the hall away from them. “Was there a problem?”

“What?” He glanced where Mason had gestured. “Oh. Just some guy asking for directions to the men’s room. I’d just come back from there myself so I knew where it was.” He looked toward the waiting room, then back at Mason. “Bryson and Dalton knew I was leaving. Is...is that okay?”

“Of course.” Mason smiled reassuringly, hating the twinge of suspicion just because his newest Seeker, and fellow Louisianan, was talking to someone he didn’t recognize. Not knowing the whys and whos behind Audrey’s murder and the frame-up had him leery about trusting anyone he didn’t know all that well. Eli certainly fell into that category, having only been on the team for a few months.

“Have you seen Bishop? I called him from the DA’s office and asked him to act as bodyguard for Landry.”

Eli grinned. “Bishop’s in surgery.”

“In surgery?”

“He told the doctors that he’s not leaving Landry’s side and they’d better make sure the chief pulls through or he’ll hold them personally accountable. They had him scrub up and gown up. And since you somehow convinced the hospital administrator to honor our concealed carry permits inside the building, Bishop’s even packing in the OR. His pistol is wrapped in sterile plastic, but he still has it on him.”

Somehow had been a generous donation in Mitch Landry’s name. Heck, they might even name a wing of the hospital after him as a result. But the outrageous expense ensured the Seekers could conceal carry in the hospital and that they had full access to just about anywhere they needed to go.
