Lucas promised himself he’d let her go soon.

He refused to use the attraction to his advantage, needing her to make the next move. She worked for his mother’s company, after all. And she’d already admitted that she couldn’t afford to compromise her place in the brownstone. Lucas knew his mother would never hold their relationship against Blair when making decisions about her employment or a coveted spot in the prestigious Brooklyn women’s residence. But he wouldn’t give Blair more reasons to feel anxious when she was already dealing with an ailing parent.

All he could do was line up this opportunity for them to be together. Give her the chance to act on the chemistry if she so desired.

He wouldn’t use his touch as coercion. This brush of fingers along her pretty face hardly counted, right? But he’d be damned if he’d pretend the attraction didn’t exist.

“I think about it sometimes,” she admitted softly, her breath a teasing caress against his knuckles as she spoke.

He wanted to feel her breath on his lips. Taste her words on her tongue. Seal her body to his.

“Not enough to want a repeat, though.” He muttered the thought aloud as his thumb outlined her jaw. Chin to ear. Back again.

“Enough to know if I kiss you again, all I’ll want is repeats.” She met his gaze, her eyes darkening so that just a thin rim of pale green was visible.

Her words stirred hope for the weekend even as she kept that damn boundary in place. He stared at her, mesmerized by the way she seemed to sway closer without ever touching him. He could have their clothes off in seconds. Hell, he didn’t even need her clothes off in that dress she was wearing.

“You’ll let me know if you need a refresher.” His thumb sketched along the plump fullness of her lower lip. Pressed slightly when he reached the soft center. “If you’d like to reevaluate.”

He breathed in the vanilla scent of her, a fragrance made more complex by the warmth of her skin.

Her mouth moved beneath his touch. “Do you honestly think we’d get to the conference if I take you up on that offer?”

The possibilities inherent in those provocative words fired over his senses while his personal Blair Westcott wish list scrolled through his mind’s eye. And damn, but he wanted to lick his way through the berry color she wore on her mouth to taste beneath it. No cosmetic could enhance the natural beauty of the woman.

“So make it a condition.” He wasn’t letting go of the option she’d left on the table. “You hold all the cards, Blair. Insist that I get you to the conference in exchange for one kiss.”

He’d give her that and a whole lot more. If he only knew precisely when this woman had become so important to him—but he couldn’t question the intensity of what she stirred inside him.

He couldn’t even think straight when she was around, and there was only one cure for that.
