Seven

Mikey’s wails woke them bright and early.

Shay popped one eye open and sought the video monitor to verify the baby was awake and maybe conjure some fairies to flutter across the room to take him out of his crib. “I start to question why I waited so long to hire a nanny.”

“Maria,” Juliana mumbled and snuggled deeper into his side where she fit nicely enough to attract the interest of his half-formed erection. “Let her go to him and you stay here.”

“I gave her today off because she watched Mikey last night.”

“Are you sure you’re a rocket scientist?” She rolled to peer at him, hair spilling over her shoulders. The sheet slipped down to reveal one pale breast covered in light abrasions from his whiskers. “Because I’m seriously questioning your intelligence right this minute.”

And now it was a fully-formed erection.

“Well, I dropped out of MIT and the last rocket I worked on exploded. So I guess that’s your answer.”

“Shay.” Her eyes filled with raw tenderness.

He looked away. Anything remotely emotional was not something he wanted to deal with this morning. Or ever. “Go back to sleep. I’ll take care of Mikey.”

Quickly, he threw on clothes and disappeared from the room before she could protest. Hopefully his exit hadn’t seemed like as much of an escape to her as it had to him.

Mikey’s face was screwed up in a sob when Shay got to the crib. Murmuring, he scooped up the bawling lump and changed him, scoring a record one mishap with the wall beside the changing table taking the sprinkling.

Shay cleaned up, then mixed formula and, with the baby in hand, dropped into the rocking chair. Mikey sucked the bottle dry in no time and screamed for a few minutes, but settled down pretty fast compared to normal. The new formula was better, but the reflux wasn’t completely gone.

With the baby quiet and snuffling against his shoulder, Shay’s conscience started in on him.

Last night had been a bad idea. A mind-blowing, stellar, really bad idea.

One he wanted to repeat as soon as possible.

Juliana did it for him, like no one else, in so many ways. The smell of her lay heavy on his skin, both arousing and infuriating. In his misguided youth, he’d given himself to her completely, loved her so fiercely, that when she’d called it off, he’d physically hurt for days. Falling in love with Juliana again was not happening.

Sex was about the body and love was about the mind. He had no doubt he could separate the two, had been doing it easily since she’d left him. But could Juliana? Not so much.

And that was the problem.

He’d hoped to send her back to New Mexico in a few weeks with nothing more than some fond memories, but the look in her eye this morning had crumbled that hope into fine dust. It hadn’t occurred to him that she would immediately jump to the conclusion that this relationship had legs. That she might fall in love with this watered-down version of him.
