Juliette Bisset was sleeping in the same room as her husband, in the same queen-size bed they always shared when visiting her mother. But it felt bigger than king-size. She was careful to stay to her own side and had been pretending to sleep since Auggie had come into the room.

She hadn’t been able to talk to Logan; he was refusing all conversations with her, and her heart was breaking.

The secret of his birth had always been tucked deep inside her. From the moment she’d held him and then breastfed him, Logan had been her son. As he’d grown up, he hadn’t seemed any different from her other children, and she’d believed that the secret of his birth would be one she’d take to her grave. But she should have known better.

She felt tears burning her eyes and struggled to keep her breathing even so Auggie wouldn’t hear her crying. But when he rolled over and put his hand on her shoulder, she let out the ragged breath that she’d been holding. She didn’t know what to say to him or to her kids. He pulled her into his arms, curving against her back and just holding her, which made her cry that much harder. She’d always struggled with why she stayed with him for all these years, but this was the very reason why. There were times when August was the best man she’d ever known. Of course, he was also the worst man she’d ever known. It was a constant balancing act. After Mari’s birth they’d found a new truce, and over the last twenty years, they’d really fallen in love and committed themselves to each other and their marriage. Or so Juliette had thought.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I know you don’t want to talk about this, but I’m very sorry that you went through the loss of our son alone and that you felt as if you had no other choice than to bring another baby home in his place.”

She shook her head. “Me, too.”

“Where did you bury our son?” he asked her.

She had been keeping this secret for too long. She’d had the baby cremated and put his ashes in an urn that she’d kept hidden here at her mom’s house until Musette had died. Her broken, lost sister, who wouldn’t
