The incessant bleeping of the machine penetrated his mind and he gasped. He found himself looking down into the still face of Jason Ellis. Maybe he was losing his mind. No. He had to stay the course. “Don’t worry, baby,” he whispered, leaned down and kissed Jason on the mouth. “I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

On the way out, he stopped and spoke to the nurse. “Look, I was Jason’s best friend at school. I want to pay my respects to the family. Do you have Jason’s uncle’s number handy? I seem to have misplaced it, and I left my cell phone at the hotel.”

There was a brief hesitation then she turned and took the number from her files. She rattled it off and he took the number down on a scrap piece of paper.

“Thanks,” he said and raced out the door.

As Proano hurried down the street, searching for the nearest phone booth, he saw that little man again. He turned to speak to him and he was like nowhere.

“What the hell!”

At the nearest phone booth, he took the number out of his pocket and punched it into the phone. A woman answered on the third ring, “Ellis residence, may I help you?”

“Yes, may I speak to Mr. Ellis please?” He had forgotten his first name. He remembered seeing it on the computer. Was it Roger?

“May I say who’s calling, sir?”

“Tell him, it’s his nephew, Jason.”

There was silence. “Hold the line, sir.”

A few minutes later, a man answered. “Is this some sort of sick joke? If it is, I’m not amused. This is a very trying time for the family. Have you no respect?”

“The day your nephew was struck by the car, he was just about to sign the papers that would have transferred Ellis Enterprises into his name. The driver of the vehicle was a man in his fifties. He used to work as a security guard at the Ellis Tower in downtown Manhattan.”

“Who are you?”

“Jason suspected that his life might be in danger. He also had many pieces of the puzzle which tied you to his parent’s death.”

“Who in the hell are you?”

“What happened to the five million dollars that was to be invested in the building of those clinics on the West Coast, Mr. Ellis?”

Silence.

“Mr. Ellis?”

“What do you want? Money?”

“No. I want just one thing. I want you to postpone disconnecting your nephews life supports for six months.”

“That’s all? That’s all you want?” He laughed. “Listen, Jason is not coming back. The doctors have told me. The only thing keeping Jason on life supports is doing is costing money.”

“Yes, but the foundation pays for that. It’s not coming out of your pocket.”

“How do you know that?”

Suddenly a voice came from Proano that sounded so familiar, but it wasn’t his. It was deeper, laced with a New York accent.

“Because, Uncle Roger,” it said, “Ellis Enterprises belongs to me. And when I come out of the coma, I’m going to put you away for a very long time.”

“Jason?” The voice on the other end of the line sounded weak, filled with horror.
