Chapter 8

BEN

It didn’t take long to reach Josh’s apartment. But the entire drive over felt thrilling, and the air was thick with anticipation.

This was it.

I had no idea how far I was going to go tonight, but the tension between Josh and myself was palpable.

I’ve never slept with a guy before, not even kissed a man. But, I have been curious in the past. But that curiosity only went as far as the odd lingering glance over at a buff guy on college campus. Or sometimes the odd towel-clad dude wandering out of the shared dormitory showers.

But now it seemed like I was about to experience my first sexual encounter with a man, and I was thrumming with nerves.

So, as soon as Josh invited me into his nicely kept open-plan home, I quickly began to ready myself for the next step.

Snatching off my jacket, I tossed it onto the couch, and then turned on my heel to face him. But — to my complete and utter puzzlement — Josh had wandered off over to the kitchen area.

“So, you want a grilled cheese?”

I wordlessly gaped at Josh.

After a long pregnant pause, he must have clearly read the confusion on my face, because he repeated his question.

“Grilled cheese? You want any, or no?”

He waved the spatula in his hand to indicate the frying pan on the cooker. “It’s pretty much the only thing I can cook,” Josh said with a shrug as he glanced around his kitchen. “But you can rest assured that it’ll be cooked in a clean kitchen.”

It took a moment longer, but I finally found my voice. “Dude, are you for real right now?”

Josh cocked his head at me in an almost comical look of confusion. “What do you mean? I cleaned my kitchen just this morning.”

“I’m not talking about the kitchen.” I paused to blow out a frustrated breath and then ran a hand across my face. “I wasn’t talking about the kitchen, or the grilled cheese. I’m talking about all of this.” I waved my hands around to indicate the apartment. “Why did you really bring me back here?”

Josh stared me down, his face expressionless for a long moment, before he too blew out a breath that sounded as frustrated as I felt.

“I don’t know what you mean.” Josh said as he dropped the spatula onto the kitchen countertop behind him. He then leaned back against the countertop.

As he folded his arms, I took in the powerful show of Josh’s bulging muscles. They underpinned a huge chest that almost looked like it could pop open the buttons of his tight fitting shirt.

“Look...” I began as I moved across the room to stand in front of him. My fingers itched to reach out for Josh, but I wasn’t sure if my touch would be welcome.

Not knowing what to do with my hands, I tucked them into my pockets as I continued. “I’ve been getting vibes from you all night. And I don’t know how you guys do this...”

“You guys?” Josh gave me a questioning raised brow.
