CHAPTER 13

“Zoey’s at the cabin. Biggs confirmed it. I’m sure the guys in the car were spotters. Let’s take them out first,” I said as we got out of the truck.

“Roger that,” Zeke replied.

We made our way back towards the parked car, moving through the trees. It had gotten dark, and we were able to move quickly without being observed. The car was facing us. We kept moving through the trees until we were behind the car. Both guys were sitting inside with the windows open, making it easier for us to take them down.

I signaled Zeke to take the guy on the driver’s side while I moved towards the passenger side. Once I was in position, Zeke signaled me. We moved in simultaneously.

I had already gotten the brass knuckles out of my back pocket. I slid my fingers through them, got out of my crouching position, took a quick step towards the passenger door, and punched the man hard on the side of his face. I could feel his cheek and jawbones breaking. The man never knew what hit him. He got knocked out as his head jerked towards his left under the force of my punch. His head slammed into the head of the other guy, who had been pushed forcefully towards his right by the impact of the left-handed Zeke’s punch. The other man was already knocked out before Zeke slammed his head against the steering for a final blow.

I slipped the brass knuckles back in my pocket and moved round to Zeke’s side. He had the driver’s door open and was pulling the man out. I pulled and dragged the other man. We dumped both men in the underbrush. I checked the rear seats of the car to confirm the men’s identity. I found what I was looking for—a couple of baseball caps with the initials DH embroidered on the front. The guys were from Dark Hawks.

“Stay in the car. Keep an eye out for any incoming men. I’ll check out the cabin. If any other vehicle comes up before you hear back from me and turns towards the cabin, ram it on the side and flip it over,” I told Zeke.

“Roger that,” he replied.

I walked carefully, moving through the trees beside the path that led to the cabin. It was about fifty yards straight down. I could see its lights as soon as I began moving towards it. As I moved closer, I began hearing voices.

When I got a clear view, I saw two cars parked near the cabin. One was parked near the porch. The other one was nearer to me, parked across the path leading to the road, and blocking it. Inside the car was a man who looked suspiciously like the Dark Hawks crew. He had the same ex-military look. He had traded his T-shirt and cap for a white shirt, but I suspected it was a ploy to fool Zoey so she would think those guys were the real deal. The same reason they ditched the SUVs and opted for tamer looking sedans.
