Abyssinia, Tobruk, Benghazi and Crete

January–July 1941

Among officers joining at this time was John Semken, another posting from the Inns of Court Regiment complete with riding boots, to find there was nothing to ride, while some existing officers went on attachments to other units or staff appointments.

Major Basil Ringrose was one of the latter who, in early 1941, left with a bag of gold Maria Theresa dollars and two regimental sergeants bound for Ethiopia, becoming one of a number of officers and senior NCOs known as Gideon Force, under the overall command of Brigadier Sandford and the operational command of Lieutenant Colonel Orde Wingate. They were to assist conventional forces in the defeat of the Italians through guerrilla action, and thus bring Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia, back into power from which position he had been removed by the Italians. The only account of Ringrose’s exploits is recorded in the citation for the fine DSO he earned:
