“You just missed Aoife O’Byrne and her Irish priest friend,” Danny Palladino said from the front steps of the Bristols’ Beacon Hill house. “Father Bracken, right?”

“That’s right,” Colin said.

Emma paused next to him on the brick sidewalk. They’d walked to Beacon Hill from her waterfront apartment. It gave her time to think about what she’d learned in Heron’s Cove, as well as from Matt Yankowski. Colin had said little.

“He’s cool,” Danny said, smoking a cigarette. “I like his sunglasses. He and Aoife only stayed a few minutes. They wanted to pay their respects. They walked from the Taj. I suggested they stop on Charles Street on their way back. It has good shops and restaurants, and our two Irish friends look like they could use a break.”

“That’s where they are now?” Emma asked.

“Yeah, I guess.” He flicked ashes from his cigarette onto the sidewalk. “My first cigarette in five years. I’ll toss the rest of the pack. Travis and Maisie won’t let me smoke in the house. Place smells like turpentine from the workers, but a cigarette would do them in. Acceptable versus unacceptable toxins, I guess. How was your drive south from Maine?”

“Quick,” Colin said. “It’s the time of year.”

Danny nodded thoughtfully. “Fewer tourists. My drive down was quiet. Maisie sulked most of they way. She likes Heron’s Cove, though. She wants to go back for wild blueberry pancakes and a fried fish sandwich. Not at the same meal.” He held up two thick fingers. “Two different meals.”

“There are some great restaurants in Heron’s Cove and the surrounding towns,” Emma said. “When did you learn Rachel had been up there last week?”

He leaned back against the steps. The stone had to be cold, but he didn’t seem to mind. “When Maisie told me this morning. She was in Los Angeles on Monday. Travis was here in Boston. Rachel stayed with him and then flew to Los Angeles on Tuesday and then back here again on Friday. I’d feel like a yo-yo but Rachel liked the action.” Danny tossed his burning cigarette onto the sidewalk. “Now I can see why she wanted to know more about you Sharpes.”

“And why would that be?” Emma asked mildly.

Danny stood up and crushed his cigarette under the toe of his Western-style boot. “You’re an interesting lot, and you’re obsessed with this Declan’s Cross thief. Makes me think there’s more at stake than a few missing Irish paintings. This guy’s responsible for other heists, isn’t he?” He tucked the remains of his pack of cigarettes into his jacket pocket. “I’ll bet Rachel wondered the same thing. Think it got her killed, Special Agent Sharpe?”

Emma didn’t respond. The black glossy front door opened, and Travis Bristol stood on the threshold. He looked slightly less pale than he had yesterday. He motioned toward the interior of the house. “Please, come in. I don’t want to alarm the neighbors. I know you must think you look like three ordinary people having a pleasant conversation about Thanksgiving decorations, but trust me—you all look armed and dangerous.
