PEDALING THROUGH LIFE!

Balancing work and personal time also comes down to practicalities. For instance, experts have noted that the time spent traveling to and from work is an important factor in overall life satisfaction. When it comes to commuting the Danes again rank very high, with an average of just twenty-seven minutes’ travel time per day compared with thirty-eight minutes on average for other OECD countries.4 And since their preferred mode of transport is the bicycle, this gives them even more flexibility because they don’t have to worry about traffic or parking. On average, Danes between ten and eighty-four years old cycle 0.47 times per day (which means they ride their bikes roughly every other day) and 46 percent use bikes as their primary mode of transportation to work, school or a university.5 In Copenhagen, the figure is even higher, with 50 percent of the population getting on their bikes whatever the occasion. When I go out with my girlfriends there, they all turn up in little dresses and heels—on bicycles! Even in December and when it’s raining. It’s also important to point out that those who choose to cycle are not doing so to save money, because people from all economic backgrounds ride bikes. Even politicians pedal: 63 percent of Danish members of parliament travel to Christianborg (the seat of Parliament) by bike.6
