A GLOOMY DISCIPLE IS A DISCIPLE OF GLOOM

Let’s not be gloomy, disgruntled, or dissatisfied, for “a gloomy disciple is a disciple of gloom.” Like all men and women, we have our troubles, our dark nights of the soul, our disappointments and illnesses; we, too, decline with old age. But in all these things we should be able to discover “perfect joy.” We should be able to recognize the face of Christ, who was made in every respect like us, and rejoice in the knowledge that we are similar to Him who suffered on the Cross out of love for us.

In a society that worships efficiency, fitness, and success, that ignores the poor and dismisses “losers,” we can bear witness to the truth of the words of Scripture: “When I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10).
