SUPPLEMENTAL TRAINING
AS YOU HAVE PROBABLY GATHERED, to run your best marathon you must prepare by doing a whole lot of running. Nevertheless, there are other activities that you can do in smaller quantities to boost optimal performance and prevent injury. These include crosstraining, flexibility, and strength work. Since you want these activities to support your training, rather than hinder it, you have to be careful what supplemental training you include and when. Marathon preparation is hard enough. This is not the time to begin a Tae Kwon Do class or power-lifting regimen. Implementing a minimal amount of crosstraining, along with a bit of flexibility and strength, however, may better your marathon performance. Not only do these types of exercises allow you to work on certain weaknesses that may be limiting your running potential, but they also provide variety to your training, making you a better overall athlete. Just remember that this is supplementing training, not replacing it.
