Chapter 12

Hank watched a battered old covered wagon rumble toward him as he stepped outside to wait for Maggie to finish her walk. It’d been a while but ladies’ ways were a mystery to him. Especially that lady’s ways.

Like why she got all sullen and quiet on the train after he opened up to her. Women were always going on about wanting a man to spill his innermost secrets, but when they do…. Well, he wouldn’t make that mistake twice.

The wagon was abreast of him now. Funny it had been parked out back. There was plenty of room to park in front, which was closer to the doors. Only thing that made sense was that it was a delivery wagon, but it didn’t look like one — he’d never seen a delivery wagon with a hooped canvas cover, at least not in good weather. As a matter of fact, there wasn’t a single other covered wagon within eyeshot.

Two men were sitting in the seat, and the biggest was driving the two-horse team hard. Too hard. There was no reason for them to be rolling by so fast. One of those little ankle-biters from the train could run right out in front of them and they wouldn’t have time to stop. Not that either looked like the type of man who’d even try. Those were a couple of tough customers.

He almost looked away from them in disgust, endangering lives like that, but something at the back of the wagon caught his eye. Squinting against the brilliant noontime sun, he tried to find it again, not sure if he’d seen it at all.

There it was! A bright red bow.

His breath caught in his chest, his heart thrumming, as he gaped at the twist of red poking up from behind the high wall of the wagon. Maggie was in there. That wagon driven by two big men, men who were acting as if Hell’s hounds were on their heels.

Hank whipped his head around, looking for…something. Help, a horse, a rifle. A gun! His was tucked up in the storage space in their train car. But that would cost him precious time in going after the wagon.

He didn’t have time to think. He had to act. Either hop on a horse tied up in front of the restaurant and give chase without any sort of protection, or possibly let them get away. The wagon’s billowing dust trail made up his mind for him. He’d be able to follow that for miles, and maybe they wouldn’t spot him so far back.

His decision made, Hank tore off for the train to collect his bag of supplies. Five long and agonizing minutes later, he was running back toward the restaurant, ready to steal the first horse he could get to. He skidded to a halt when he saw three men chatting around the hitching post.

He slowed to what he hoped looked like a casual saunter, though every fiber of his being screamed to run, to hurry, don’t lose that wagon.
