Missy at Bat

The vampire moved fast, as Missy knew she would. The mini-barrier she was conjuring around herself didn't stop the vampire's forward velocity but slowed her down just enough to allow Missy to dodge her. As the vampire turned for another attack, Missy swung the baseball bat and hit her squarely in the head sending a jolt up Missy’s forearms to her elbows.

The vampire smiled. A long, fresh gash along her temple closed itself and disappeared.

Missy backed away, trying to refocus her energies on building the barrier around her. The vampire casually sauntered toward her like it was all a big joke. Missy brandished the bat and swung it, hoping to force the vampire to retreat. The vampire merely bent backward, and the bat missed her face by a couple of inches. The vampire stopped, relaxed, and shrugged.

Then her arm struck like a snake and snatched the bat away. The vampire held the bat in her two hands and snapped it in half like a twig, tossing the pieces to the floor.

The vampire stood between Missy and the bedroom door. She was cornered now. When she considered diving through the window, she remembered the brand-new, hurricane-proof, impact-resistant windows she had been so proud to install. There would be no diving through that glass.

She bent to pick up the piece of the bat that was nearest, basically just the handle ending in a long sliver of wood. The vampire laughed and kicked her hard in the pelvis, just as Missy’s hand wrapped around the wood. Missy went flying and crashed into the foot of the bed knocking it toward the wall.

Two gray rockets shot out from under the bed and raced toward the open door.

The vampire was at first startled by the cats. Then a malicious gleam lit her eyes and she grabbed one by the scruff of the neck, Brenda. Dangling from the vampire’s hand, she yowled in terror as the vampire reached with her free hand for Brenda’s head.

“Don’t you touch my babies!” Missy screamed, launching herself at the monster.

Distracted by the cats, the vampire’s guard was down. Missy barreled into her like a linebacker sacking a quarterback. They slammed into the dresser. Brenda broke free and ran from the room.

And Missy rammed the splintered bat into the vampire’s gut.

The monster roared with pain, and then made an eerie, keening cry.

The wood sliver went in easier than Missy expected. But she had to get the heart. The vampire struggled, trying to push Missy away with ebbing strength. As Missy pressed the vampire against the dresser, she pushed the bat handle down, towards the creature’s crotch, angling the point upward in the abdominal cavity, and then shoved it deeper into the body, under the ribcage, up toward the heart.

The vampire gasped.

Black blood gushed over Missy’s hands and arms. The vampire shuddered and exhaled a foul breath.

Then the body became limp, falling away from Missy’s hands and landing on the floor. The skin instantly dried up and flaked away, the bones separating and detaching, dust falling from every opening.
