CHAPTER 9
BEWARE OF THE STEROID FREAK
MAX SHORTTE and JANGA ZILOTIN: Many people say Evander Holyfield used PEDs. That has never been proven to us. Where is the proof?
J. A.: If you are looking for a failed drugs test, then there isnât one. The closest thing to proof comes in the form of his alias nameâEvan Fields. Numerous parcels and post from an illicit pharmacy were trackable to his home address, but mailed under the pseudonym of Evan Fields.
An undercover journalist called Holyfieldâs home phone number on a pretence, wishing to speak with the mysterious Evan Fields. Holyfield himself answered the phone and mistakenly told the journalist that he was indeed speaking to Evan Fields and confirmed that Fields had the same birth date as Evander Holyfield. The fact that a professional athlete confirmed an alias was big news. The fact that anyone reputable has an alias in the first place arouses suspicion, but a professional athleteâthatâs even worse.
Evan Fieldsâs pharmacy has been linked to and implicated in the PEDs supply to other shady and suspicious athletes, who also coincidentally used pseudonyms which bore a resemblance to their real names.
Other âproofâ comes in the form of Holyfieldâs abnormal ECG reading following his defeat by Michael Moorer in 1994. His abnormal heart reading was consistent with steroids and HGH users, but was covered up and conveniently repackaged as a misdiagnosis.
Further indirect proof comes in the form of his cranium size and shape, which has noticeably become larger and more irregular over the years. Steroids and HGH abuse cause well-known side effects of skull bossing, cranial enlargement, and drug-induced acromegalyâall of which can be seen in Holyfield. Further retrospective suspicion was aroused when his increased muscularity and masculinity appeared to coincide exactly with the time frame of his rapid and irregular hair loss.
Furthermore, his erratic and non-linear performances in the ring arouse even greater suspicion. Unusually and totally against the grain, his performances improved with the increasing quality of his opposition. This is the polar opposite of most elite boxers, who generally destroy lower-ranked opposition but struggle with equally ranked fighters.
The final anomaly of Holyfieldâs career path which raised the eyebrows of knowledgeable onlookers were the grossly skewed timelines of his physical and technical primes. From a physical standpoint, he clearly continued to improve and mature well into his late thirties, whereas his technical prime occurred much earlier.

MOH ALI: Was Evander Holyfield on steroids when he moved up to heavyweight?
J. A.: Does a bear take a shit in the woods? Does a horse piss where she pleases?
Anyone with approximately half a fully functioning brain, reasonable eyesight, and some common senseâand who has followed boxing for around thirty-five yearsâcan easily tell there are certain modern boxers who look more muscular while being physically leaner at the weight, relative to their counterparts from yesteryear. Furthermore, if you have an eye for detail, you can easily notice that much of this steroid-acquired muscle is located in specific muscle groups, such as the traps. Believe me,
